Same contaminant prompted massive pet-food recall

VANCOUVER — Canada's largest producer of aquaculture feed issued a product recall yesterday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that farmed fish have been fed meal contaminated with melamine - the same chemical that has tainted pet food throughout North America.

There's and old line, GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) which applies here. Eventually, corporations are going to understand that cutting corners on the production of food is not really cost effective.

fortunately the amount fed to the fish wasn't enough to cause harm to the fish or, more important, to the eaters of said fish.

I personally try to avoid farmed fish for a variety of reasons but this is one of them. Not the chance of poison but the concept that they are not eating their natural diets, not living their natural lives and generally, they don't taste as good as the fresh from the ocean types.

It's scary, this poison thing, but hopefully it will lead to better controls in the pet food industry.
