sighting pic sequence

Hi all,

Here's some pics of of unusual activity I photographed 8 July,2005 here in Sydney. I was looking South towards Long Reef, with North Sydney in background at around 6.17am. The four images were taken from maybe 20 miles away (?) with slow shutter speeds over a period of about 1 minute with my Nikon 5000 (plus 3x tele converter).

Long time exposure of regular flying objects? The dots along the lines suggest this... As for the first two, could be anything. =/

EXIF data says that the exposure times of the photos were (in order)

2 sec
1 sec
8 sec
8 sec

All with a fnumber of 4.8

Your camera says 2005 (probably just a mix up with the year) with times of 6:16:11 through 6:17:35


Do you still have the RAW images?

They are quite large in size.

Edit: Picture o4 looks like it contains an assortment of aircraft (the 8 sec exposure looks to have captured the blinking lights and trail)

o3 is weird though... the big light blob.

It looks like the camera was disturbed during this shot.

I don't know what the big blob light is.

Thanks for your responses. I have photographed a lot of activity over the least several years and am already having my material investigated.

I have started shooting with a Panasonic FZ50 which has a tele of 420mm. Here's a Panasonic pic with exposure at 4 secs (31/3/07)

I hate to do this, but what I'm seeing is just a regular airplane, blinking red once every second. It even matches the the 4 second exposure you mentioned... =/

and then line the objects up side-by-side - one is daytime, the other is night time!

Could they be the same..or similar craft? Weird.

Hi Dulcimer,

I have shot a lot of raw with the Nikon (during 2005 as well), and I find it very useful to bring up the exposure one or two stops in pp, without having to go to longer shutter speeds. It's a very difficult subject to shoot with it's extreme brightness when it blinks. Here's two examples of raw original using more exposure later.

Yes as another has suggested, consider dropping them by Above Top Secret's photo professional for his analytic consideration. I'm certainly not doubting the realism of the pics. Only suggesting he can add something such as number and speed..

Keep up the good work and keep us Aussies informed of any strange happenings. I have an Australian-focused thread in the paranormal section, but maybe it is time to start one on UFOs...

Have you done anything to the pictures at all? Like colour enhancement or anything? Because the object looks really bright, i'm sure a lot of other people would have noticed it.

If I thought that it would help me find out more about the objects I photograph, I would.

Thanks for your response. Yes, there are some interesting things happening in the sky, although I have learned a long time ago that there are no 'ufo' experts...

I have a confession. I don't keep people informed, although I did release a cd rom of my material a few years back called 'Northern Beaches Sightings'. There are a couple of hundred images / 30 mins video there. I have also provided thousands of images for Scientific research/evaluation over the last few years.

The Broken Bay area has a lot of activity, so maybe it's little further North too? Objects coming out of the water etc.

Long exposures like 1-8 secs will record a brighter 'blob' than short ones such as 1/4 sec if the object is stationary. Different cameras will also record images differently as I have shown with the Nikon and then the Panasonic.

Maybe you don't want US to find out more.

Quite frankly, I'm not interested.

other than the first one there all normal air plains ..
i can go out in my back yard and shoot the same thing with a 2x nd filter right now ..
try setting your focus to infinity it will help with things being sharper and not big
blobs of light ..
