Sunni demand could unravel Iraqi government

edition.cnn.com

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's top Sunni official has set a deadline of next week for pulling his entire bloc out of the government -- a potentially devastating blow to reconciliation efforts within Iraq. He also said he turned down an offer by President Bush to visit Washington until he can count more fully on U.S. help.

Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi made his comments in an interview with CNN. He said if key amendments to the Iraq Constitution are not made by May 15, he will step down and pull his 44 Sunni politicians out of the 275-member Iraqi parliament

So essentially the top sunni official in Iraq is threatening to collapse the entire government unless his demands are met within 7 days. This could prove disasterous for Iraq and the Bush administration. If you ask me Iraq is doomed. Sectarian tensions are high, al quada is still operating throughout the country, Iran is meddling in the government and providing weapons to terrorists, al-sadr and his camp are not supporting the government, and now all the sunnis are threatening a governmental pull out in no less than a week. Not to mention the fact that there is still no accomplished funding bill for the troops. The troop surge of Baghdad is meaningless if the Iraqi government doesn't even function.

Soon Iraq will descend into total chaos and civil war. Shortly there after the Middle East will ignite. Oil will skyrocket and western economies will stagger. Did Bush honestly think we could spend 4 years in a major oil producing Middle-Eastern with clashing religous sects and expect anything less than an internal civil war and a larger regional conflict? This summer is about to get very interesting...
