Diazepam? Is it more dangerous than Alcohol? And, is it more addictive?

Withdrawal....?

You get patches for Smoking. You get Methhadone for Diamorphine (Heroine) you get Diazepam for Alcohol or do you?.. No you don't.

They tell you to quit drinking or you'll "die" and give you nothing for it!

Diazepam (or eq) is the only drug avaliable to help you quit so why does the NHS not give it to you?

WHY?

Diazepam and related drugs are recommended to relieve alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

They are usually dispensed as a part of an inpatient or outpatient program or by a private doctor to ease the first few days of stopping alcohol.

Thing is, you don't mix the two, because they're both central nervous system depressants and it's far too easy to wake up dead. Bad juju with this combo. Diazapam is Valium, isn't it? The Net will tell you more but the key is not mixing booze and tranks/sedatives...ever!

My guess would be that diazepam is very addictive. So essentially you would be covering up one addiction with another. It's better to deal with the original addiction only. One addiction or problem at a time. All you would be doing would be replacing the alcohol with diazepam and I don't think that would be a good idea.

Diazepam is also given for its sedating and anxiety-relieving effects as a pre-med before surgery or medical investigations or procedures, and to alcoholics during acute alcohol withdrawal. www.netdoctor.co.uk...

So, essentially it is used to reduce the effects of the DTs. It's a short term treatment, to be used under medical supervision...so, at the risk of alienating my pal, the majormalfunction, I'd do what the docter says. Good luck, though.

I have a friend trying to quit smoking and he gets help with patches etc.

My Brother is on Methodone to help him with Heroine addiction.

I am addicted to alcohol and what is there to help me come off it except counselling etc???

Diazepam helps me with the "shakes"? For now.

"Booze" damages your Liver. Does Diazepam?

What else is there?
Alco-Patches??

I think there should be something? A substitute etc?

"Alone in my room"! Again?

There's always antabuse if you want to quit entirely.

It's harsh, but it works, from what I hear.

"the original addiction only" I agree but put yourself in my state/position?

Its so easy to take an alternative like a "patch".

"Windows" 2000/ME/XP etc have "patches" to solve its problems, why not someone like me?

If you have a headache do you take a drug for it?

I have a problem and need a solution..A "PATCH"!!

Sorry,

Tom

PS. I have the DT's daily.

I might try "smoking" instead, as that is what most people do to get over a problem etc!

If I'm not mistaken, there's a deterrent type of drug called Ant-Abuse, that makes you sick if you drink. I'd talk to the Doc, and set something up under medical supervision.

My good friend had to quit as his liver went, and essentially he died twice while waiting for a transplant. But...the liver regenerated enough that he's no longer on the list. He tells me he misses salt more than he does the scotch, but he's alive. I'm sure you wont believe the next part, but he recently won a million dollars on our 649 lottery (encore).

But he won't take another drink.

See, that's part of your problem, no offense. There is no "quick fix" for addiction. you have to work through it or you repeat the cycle. I quit smoking cigarettes after 15 years and it was hard, but I did it without covering it up with a patch. I just quit. Of course, I was pregnant, so I had an incentive, but my point is a patch is not going to fix your underlying problem. It's just going to put a band aid on it and you're still going to have to face it someday.

Why not now?

I have been drinking for several years and the only thing that has worked for me is "an alternative" Diazepam..Lorazepam..Chlordiazepoxide Etc.

I watched a film called SPECIAL "Specioprin Hydrochloride"

Yes I did think WOW thats me!

I think doctors tend not to want to prescribe benzos as a long term replacement for alcohol since most people end up getting addicted to both and become worse off than just being addicted to alcohol.

What happens if you get like a couple weeks worth of benzos and stop drinking? You should be able after a few days of not drinking to trail off the benzos without going through withdrawal symptoms. Of course nothing will work if you really don't want to quit.

I feel guilty for drinking, cost etc.. But I do not feel guilty with Diazepam etc because its prescribed.

I do not get a high or feel happy taking Diazepam (I do with Beer) I feel slightly normal.

People say you get high etc... NO I just feel less anxious than normal life.

If you had to take Alcohol or a substitue drug what would you take?

PATCHES? Or Prescribed alternatives?

Quit smoking and I will help you with etc.. etc..

By the way I was prescribed acamprosate etc.

Hypno? Next? No way!!!

I have never been into alcohol, but when my first was born, i was a little nutty :shk: (something i know most of you couldnt beleive)
My Doctor prescribed Valium. Anyway, i liked it, i really liked it, boy did i like it!!!

I couldnt wait for my next refill, to be honest with you. It was THAT good.
Until one day when i went to my doctor and he said that was it. No more.
Back then (not a dinasour), they didnt have the typical antidepressants like they do now that would maybe have taken the edge off. They had Valium (Diazapam). I left my doctors office :shk: wanting to jump off a bridge. I thought about it and i knew my doctor was right. I was going to be brave and not ever take them again.

This is good, i like to pour my heart out once in awhile. Anyway, the walls started closing in on me...literally, i didnt sleep, my eyesight was screwey, i tried in the midst of all this to be a good mother and wife. :shk: Anyway, it took me one whole year to be able to drive again, to work, and to function in a normal capacity. But i did it.

I'm telling you this, because Valium is a very dangerous substance and very highly addictive and i went through hell
literally- I cant even explain what that drug did to me.

If you drink, stop cold turkey, go to a rehab, do anything ...ask for some newer drug that does not make your life revolve around that evil drug (Valium) or you will be sorry.

I'm DGtempe and i'm addicted to people places, things and Valium and i've abstained now for 20 years- thank God.

Good luck.

Valium and other benzos such as Ativan (lorazepam) can be addictive, but actually as TQ alluded to, they're really easier on the body than alcohol.

The problem is that a doctor can't regulate your alcohol intake, so eventually you end up mixing them.

to TQ:

I'd ask your doctor about Temazepam for sleep. It's a longer-acting benzo taken before bedtime just once a day. It helps me a lot the entire day and I still drink and it doesn't seem to cause a problem.

5 mg a day?

That's nothing, I wouldn't be worried about that.

5 mg an hour-- that's getting heavy

I have been away for nearly a Month (experiments etc)?!

"The Verve" (Richard Ashcroft) was correct... "The drugs don,t work"

"Four intense, mad months. Really insane. In great ways and terrible ways. In ways that only good music and bad drugs and mixed emotions can make."

Bye again.
