After the new evidence has come in showing chimps have the beginnings of language and culture, I now have to side with the OP on this one.

If you haven't already seen it, check out this article where chimps have been discovered using spear-like weapons and living in caves just like our own ancestors did.

The creepy side of this is that it reminds me of those Planet of the Apes movies.

Oh, and BTW, chimps are not monkeys, they are apes.

This is stupid. Hey *SNIP* fish are people too. Ok i'm only kiding, but this is dumb. Amusing but dumb. Here's what I really think - give rights to toilet paper, it suffers the most, and we must do something about this.

We deserve rights. The human race has held our race back for too long now. The time has come for revolution!
Give us rights or give us death!

Looking not too deep at the world situation, being a person doesn't help anyone that much. Chimpanzees in zoos are treated better than starving humans, so where is the advantage?

No there is not much advantage in being human these days, when powerful illusionists and propagandists tear you down constantly. It is better to be an animal in the great unknown!

OK then death, this is beyond stupid.

Rights for monkeys, apes whatever is comical!

The people who support this are the same who probably put cute little sweaters on their dogs, and let their cats eat with them at the dinner table.

Hey I think animals are super! Super tasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To those of you questioning the rights of apes I say this. How much time have you spent thinking about consciousness and sentience? How capable are you of justifing your own consciousness and sentience? And what do we really know about apes and how their minds function?

Why chimps? I thought a dog was a man's best friend. Hey you think if chimps gets rights some crazy old rich lady files a law suit for her cat aganist this saying the cat needs rights too?

Question to the person that came up with this if he ever somehow comes across this thread:

Dear whoever you are - what and how much have you been smoking?

You're behind the times I'm afraid and It's certainly not a 'global precedent'

Apes have 'Human Rights' in New Zealand and have done for the last 8 years

In New Zealand, apes - gorillas, orang utans, chimpanzees and bonobos - were granted special rights as 'non-human hominids' in 1999 to grant protection from maltreatment, slavery, torture, death and extinction.

observer.guardian.co.uk...

Who can argue with that?

I would love to grant "human" rights to chimps and other great apes, but I just don't see it as politically viable. As sad is it may be, these animals are still very valuable in testing new drugs, surgery techniques, etc.

In the end, real human life should take precedence.

I will say I'm against any unnecessarily cruel treatment of animals, especially the apes who are so close to us.

I would counter to anyone that says apes do not talk
they may not have the ability of speech but they do talk.
American Sign Language
Koko the female gorilla is much smarter then a Chimp, ie she has a larger vocabulary, which I always maintained in my youth when they always said chimps were smarter.
there are at least three kinds of Chimps, the gorilla size Bili Chimps *lion killers* immune to posion of the natives arrows and only recently discovered, regular chuimps who are male led and are killers and murders and hunters of meat and Bonabos a female dominated society with no killing, just lots of sex and masterbation.
three types of gorillas.
Moutain, Eastern and Western Lowland Gorillas
I supported this inititive over seven years ago in a internet petition.

You say that like its a bad thing. Id much rather eat at a table with a cat than a human. Himans spit and spray all over everything, and they are annoying dining companions.

But I think its ridiculous to give chimps human status. How rude. Why insult the chimps? They are wonderful creatures. Why degrade and lower them to the status of the most vile primate, Homo Sapiens?

I mean, Darwin really struck low when he declared humans and apes related. Did he ever think what those poor gorilla and chimps thought when they heard that? Im surprised they did not declare a fatwa on him.

I do not believe humans evolved from apes. I favor the theory that we evolved straight from pond scum. Nukes, death camps, racism, and American Idol's popularity simply confirms this.

So please you sick "animal rights activists", don't hurl slurs and insults at chimps by declaring them human or people. Please just let these poor creatures return home to the wild where they can be the wonderful creatures they are.

Anyone watched the "Animal cops" show on animal planet? Animals have rights. You cant leave your dog in the cold without decent shelter. Cant mistreat/malnourish them. People do jail time all the time for mistreatment of animals.

Apes are apes. Chimps are chimps, etc. People are humans,"persons". We have HUMAN rights. An apes should not be tortured obviously, but an ape can not be declared a person. If people want to put more extensive and human-like laws for the rights/treatment of apes i'm all for it. But dont try to give an ape a "person" status.

Utterly stupid concept!

Has anyone considered this:
What if it commits a crime? Could it be held as responsible, like a human and tried and sentanced?

Would it be entitled to state benefits? If so, everyone would be on the bandwagon trying to get help for their pets!

These animal supporters can be so extreme sometimes, do they really know how deluded they sound?

He is an animal who should be treated as a pet (although a very special one) who is perfectly entitled to be fed and treated by a vet.

Only a human can be a person. Fact.

This is silly and a smokescreen for a larger agenda.

I do believe that there are laws in place to adequately insure humane treatment for animals.

Also, I believe that a chimp is not capable of handling donations for his care, so to donate directly to him is idiotic.

There must be legal means to set up a dedicated fund administered by a human to care for the chimp's well-being.

People leave money in their wills for the care of their beloved pets all the time without granting personhood to parakeets, toy poodles and tabby cats.

As Mirthful said, in Austria the laws are different.

I agree that we may have to eventually create a "special status" for certain kinds of animals. Companion animals do have some language capability... food animals don't. I think that a distinction should be made for companion animals (and would class chimps and other simians under this as well as whales and dolphins) that gives them protection under law.

I was quite surprised when I first read your post, but when I went to the article and watched the video I saw no evidence of what was being said. It showed a chimp put a stick in its mouth briefly and then climb back up the tree. Then it switches to the chimp (or another) eating a bushbaby. I see no "spearing" going on, or even the making of a spear for that matter. Also nothing on caves. This is very interesting if true, are there any other sources to back it up?
