Environmental agency Natural England said specialists did not know what had caused the deformity.

A spokeswoman said it was thought to be the first time such frogs had been found in the UK - although they had been seen in the US.

Officials said the frogs were found recently in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, by a member of the public.

'We are not aware that frogs with this kind of deformity have been seen in this country before - it would be interesting to hear from anyone who has seen them,' said the spokeswoman.

'We not sure what the reason is. A parasite, pollution - they are possibilities. But we've reached no conclusions.

i'm of the opinion that this deformity is the result of damage to the eggs at a pretty early stage. it would explain why there were more than one.

Sadly it is common. If you don't believe in global warming, thats one thing, but to ignore that we, as humans, make an impact on the environment is sad.

Its sad what is happening to the world's amphibians, but a six legged salamander would be pretty cool...
