A cruise ship carrying nearly 1,200 passengers and some 400 crew was being evacuated off the Greek island of Santorini on Thursday after issuing a distress signal, authorities said.
The Greek-flagged Sea Diamond apparently hit rocks and was listing near the island's main port, the Merchant Marine Ministry said.
The ministry said about 650 people have been safely evacuated so far.
More than a dozen ships were involved in the rescue effort. Six navy rescue helicopters, two military transport planes and four warships were also sent to the area, along with emergency medical crews.

its terrorism and iran must be blamed!
yes thats it
seriously
any local tidal conditions can be to blame - or a channel changing over the years or even a moved underwater object.
or of course the worst case - the captain being drunk

Yes, it must be iran's new sunrock mines that they purchased from russia. They're known to very closely resemble actual sea rocks. And, using the latest stealth technology, they are practically invisible to both radar and sonar. Some even say that a ships lookout would have a hard time spotting them ...

In such an active volcanic area like this (Santorini), I can image it must be hard to keep the sea maps uptodate. New rocks can appear from volcanic activity any time and anywhere. Or maybe the rock was placed there by a gigantic squid?

Why did they need to send 4 warships along with the other boats and planes? Nothing better to do?

Yeah, can't they attach some sort of rock-finder thing that flashes when they come to close to a rock?
Wasn't that in a movie?

Huh, for some reason I keep having a Celine Dion song playing over and over again in my head and images of Leonardo DeCrapio (spelling intentional) flashing through my mind....
Anyway, I hope everyone is ok - sad to see a perfectly good vacation shot to heck. Let's hope they get to everybody in time!
