Cruise Ship Starts To Sink 100's Rescued

www.cnn.com

A cruise ship carrying nearly 1,200 passengers and some 400 crew was being evacuated off the Greek island of Santorini on Thursday after issuing a distress signal, authorities said.

The Greek-flagged Sea Diamond apparently hit rocks and was listing near the island's main port, the Merchant Marine Ministry said.

The ministry said about 650 people have been safely evacuated so far.

More than a dozen ships were involved in the rescue effort. Six navy rescue helicopters, two military transport planes and four warships were also sent to the area, along with emergency medical crews.

What I want to know, is how can a cruise ship, on a routine cruise hit rocks?

its terrorism and iran must be blamed!

yes thats it

seriously
any local tidal conditions can be to blame - or a channel changing over the years or even a moved underwater object.

or of course the worst case - the captain being drunk

Oh and here I thought it was probably Bush's fault.

No seriously, I hope that it wasn't the Captain being under the influence. It's a cruise ship. Aren't there any type of safeguards that would alert the bridge that they were approaching something like that? If not, I find it scary that the lives of literally thousands of people are so easily jeopardized.

Yes, it must be iran's new sunrock mines that they purchased from russia. They're known to very closely resemble actual sea rocks. And, using the latest stealth technology, they are practically invisible to both radar and sonar. Some even say that a ships lookout would have a hard time spotting them ...

Or, much more likely, the crew stayed up and partied at the captain's dinner way too long the previous night.

Yeah I heard about those stealth mines. Those Iranians are so crafty!

In such an active volcanic area like this (Santorini), I can image it must be hard to keep the sea maps uptodate. New rocks can appear from volcanic activity any time and anywhere. Or maybe the rock was placed there by a gigantic squid?

BRILLIANT!!

a giant squid , trained by the same team that trains the dolphins for the CIA!

EXCELLENT

so now we can happily blame bush without things like the facts getting in the way

Uh-oh Giant Squids! That's some good thinking!

But wait! Weren't there some giant squids in the bays of California in the last couple of days? Now I'm ascared! We must alert homeland security immediately!

Why did they need to send 4 warships along with the other boats and planes? Nothing better to do?

thats one`s easy - there searching for the US trained squid so they have evidence it was the repilians - sorry Bush.

or they are relatively quick and can house ppl in case teh ship rolls over

I just knew that those reptilians were behind all this. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Masons are involved somehow as well.......

Seriously, I believe that this is the same area where a ferry hit some rocks and killed 80+ people 5 or 6 years ago. They need to do something if it's that dangerous.

Yeah, can't they attach some sort of rock-finder thing that flashes when they come to close to a rock?

Wasn't that in a movie?

You sure would think that they would have some sort of safeguard available. There has to be something that can be done. For cryin' out loud, it's not like some kid who runs his speedboat onto a sandbar the second time he ever pilots a boat. These are seasoned mariners, who are sailing a Cruise Ship, with thousands of lives in their care.

For real. My parents had a fishfinder on our 20' Bayliner that showed the shape of the bottom of the lake and beeped when we were too shallow or there was a large school of fish. Total cost: I think about $150.00.

There seems to be very little regulation of cruise ships and if they don't care about their passenger's safety, that's one thing. But every company cares about money and the repairs associated with this I would guess would be way more than the price of a fishfinder.

Huh, for some reason I keep having a Celine Dion song playing over and over again in my head and images of Leonardo DeCrapio (spelling intentional) flashing through my mind....

Anyway, I hope everyone is ok - sad to see a perfectly good vacation shot to heck. Let's hope they get to everybody in time!

DeCrapio! I love it!!!!

Thank god, nobody died. I think it's great that we make stupid jokes about this subject. God knows my sense of humor is, well frankly, bizarre. I'm no favorite of the ATS staff due to my usually absurd posts. That being said, I am thrilled that this story ended with a "happy" ending. I still have questions as to how something like this could happen - especially since this particular territory has a history.

I'm guessing too much Ouzo?

Seriously......I really have to get this stupid Celine Dion "Near/Far" song out of my head! Aaaaghh!

I'm glad to see everyone is safe. However, is this NORMAL to have this many military type there.

4 warships???

Most likely. When a cruise ship goes over you don't want pirates coming anywhere near. Plus the military personnel are well trained and rehearsed for this kind of thing. At least I would hope.

Shattered OUT...
