'Flaming debris' nearly hits jet

The pilots of a Chilean passenger jet reported seeing flaming debris fall past their aircraft as it approached the airport at Auckland, New Zealand.

The pilots reported the near-miss to air traffic controllers, reportedly saying the noise of the debris breaking the sound barrier could be heard above the roar of his aircraft's engines.

Airways New Zealand had been warned by Russian authorities almost two weeks ago that a satellite would be entering the earth's atmosphere sometime today between 10.30am and midday NZ time (6.30-8am WA time).

Airways New Zealand then provided that information to airlines and pilots that would be travelling in that region at that time.

Its ok, i've read enough prophecies so that i dont sleep much at nights anyway. Just another prophet. I'm a prophet too.

NASA says it was a meteor, not the Russian space junk.

An orbital debris expert at Nasa told Associated Press news agency that he had checked with the Russians and that their vessel - a spacecraft resupplying the International Space Station - had fired its re-entry rockets 12 hours after the Chileans reported the near miss.

I'm thinking more likely a meteor, it seems the Russians stuck to the plan - worrying this seems to be an everyday occurance tho!

Experts say about 50 meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere every day, compared to 150 pieces of man-made space junk.
