My first guess was that it was a satellite, however after spending a few hours searching to see if any have fallen, I've come up empty. Also the individual that was interviewed indicated that something large flew overhead and dropped the object. Could this be a military communication device being dropped off a plane, but being dropped at the wrong spot?

It is not a satellite. Satellites burn up on re-entry. The Gods Must be Crazy.

This is a very strange story, I can't wait to hear the details on this one when they become available. So, a witness sees and object fly over and 'drop' another object... and this object is making strange sounds. How peculiar is that? I know Somalia was working on getting their own communications sat up in space... but why would a plane or helicopter just... well, drop it off in the middle of nowhere?

Seeing that Somalia has been a hotbed for violence in that past I sure hope the people over there don't start ripping the thing apart and shooting at it before some pictures are taken and the 'device' is examined...
(sigh)

Im not aware of any satellite that can even survive re-entry and not be a piece of scrap metal afterwards. The only things that are designed to survive intact are things like sample return probes and they go to great lengths to plan were and when they land.

This is why I love these forums, I would've never thought of that lol.

Seriously though any other speculation as to what this could be?

Who wants to sponsor my flight out there to find out?

Any other news on this? Or is it just a media blackout now? I heard something on the news that fighting erupted again in Somalia... near Mogadishu.

No other news sources have picked up on the story. Many UFO websites have.

No more information than we have.

I would say the story is dead.

This is a bit of a dissapointment, even though it's likely an earthly explanation, I would still love to know what this was.

Why don't anyone just call the newspaper that wrote the story? The name of the journalists is written in the text of the article.

Try a search next time. This story was posted three days ago.

Hmmm. Lights up at night and speaks in a strange language... Hmmm.

I've got it! Nobody told the Somali villagers about the new fast food joint. Typical small-town reaction.

Interesting, especially as George Bush Jnr mentioned Somalia recently with regards to US foreign policy & the fight against international terrorism.

More than likely it's probably a UAV, as radical Muslim groups have been reported* fighting near the town of Buulo-Burde against Ethiopian and Somalian Militia. I'm sure the USA is keeping a close eye on it.

I doubt we'll hear more of this story though, to get clarification, which is a shame.

sorry had to say, an american UAV utters spoken language the locals can't understand? didn't know we had talking UAV's

Interesting story.. on to read the whole thread now.

For now i'd guess it's a communication device or some other earthly machine. the spoken language could just be an onboard computer that uses a little spoken feedback (like airplane computers bleeping "pull up too low terrain, pull up too low terrain)

what strikes me though is the unrecognized language, you'd be surprised how many countryside folk even in those countries at least recognize english, maybe not understand.. but sure recognize it.

*joke* if it were travelling north maybe it was looking for the ancient town of heliopolis, supposed anunnaki town in predynastic egypt
.. they are back!!! just kidding..

interesting though.. keeping my eyes on this.

btw about the 2 sources.. that's not completely true.. 2 sources in english maybe. I've seen about a dozen different news sites reporting this, but since they are local it's in somali.. you can barely make out enough of it to know it's this story. some use the abbrevation u.f.o. that was my clue.. the rest I cant understand.. personally I think I have a better chance of understanding chinese

This seems to be the latest news on this item:

(SomaliNet) The story “Unknown Satellite Like” which we published on March 26 was initially received from interviews and coverage done by Mogadishu radio stations. At the time of the incident many people in the area talked as if they saw the peculiar object. After many SomaliNet news readers contacted us about the article, we decided to investigate more and tried to verify the validity of this strange story.

According to reporters who went to the area, so far no single person who saw the object could be found. Although everyone believes the story is true, they all gave the same answer: I didn't see it with my eyes but...

We might run another update on this story after the reporters who went to the region go back to Mogadishu. In the meantime, whether to believe the story or not is up to the reader. SomaliNet apologizes for publishing it without doing more investigation.

i found it odd that i didn't learn about this story until YESTERDAY! where have I been?

it was the same link to that same story so nothing new here - sorry peeps.

i will say, since i did miss it in late march, the story has not dissappeared yet into the complete unknown. that's tough to do for a UFO story... or satellite story, or whatever the case is...

kung fu.

Regardless of what it is, I think somebody needs to get out there and check it out.

MY opinion, is that it's probably some type of black ops spy equipment, if not from the US, from another country. With all the action over there in recent months, I wouldn't doubt it too much. As far as the unintelligible language is concerned, some equipment does make strange noises. Servo-motors, for example, make whirring sounds. To a village that is separated from 1st world technology, any language would be strange, and any item would be un-indentifiable.

As much as I wish it were a UFO, unless there's a few credible scientists out there examining it, I'd have to say that it is earthly in origin.

Wow, this is fascinating. I just hope this story doesn't just wither up and die and get forgotten later. Someone should really go there with a camera!

Why isn't anyone doing anything? This could be the find of a lifetime!

When I saw the headline for this thread (the what, "threadline?"), the first mental image I got was of the scene from The Truman Show, where The protagonist is getting into his car and a "pot" spotlight falls from the clear blue sky and smashes in the street; his first hint that he's living on a soundstage.

The next image I got was of a downed venus probe that Giligan finds the lens for . . .

I have no idea why you assumed I actually thought the device would have "spoken" in the literal sense. You know what they say about assumptions! For the record, I've worked across EMEA over the years and I agree that English is commonly recognised, even in seemingly remote areas.

But..

If you had a piece of equipment, say a UAV, that was worth a lot of money and also contained sensitive information/equipment, I'm sure you'd want it "phone home" in the event of it going wrong or, in this instance, crashing. Now that process might be silent or it might make a lot of beeping or rather strange sounds. If you combine the strange beeping sounds with an object that isn't exactly common and throw in the mix a culture which is steeped in mysticism and superstition, you have an interpretation. A natural human reaction which almost forces you to provide a mental representation of the meaning or significance of something.

Beeps and strange noises *might* sound like a language to someone because that's all they can relate it to.

Gilligan's Island is the first thing that popped into my mind.

Seriously though, you have a situation where Islamic militia/forces are trying to consolidate the government. The various warlords are finally getting together to fight back. The US is supporting the warlords in their fight to prevent a radical Islamic government from forming. If the Islamic forces succeed in taking over, Somalia becomes a haven for terrorists (not that it isn't already). Anyone want to take any bets that there are US Special Forces on the ground there now handling the delivery of weapons and tactics to the side the US supports. It is probably some sort of UAV part.

Thing lights up after dark, speaks in an unknown language... I'll stick with my original assessment — that somebody opened a fast-food restaurant in the Somalia outback, and the villagers just over-reacted.

Then they tasted those yummy BonusBurgers and Monster Tacos, and their unreasoning fear was overcome by an insatiable craving.
