Bird Flu Update!

www.birdflu.com

A Russian virus expert warned that a human pandemic of the bird flu virus was highly likely and called on the government to stock up on medicine and prepare hospital beds.

'No quarantine measure can prevent the pandemic. It can only slow it for a few days,' Dmitry Lvov, director of the Virology Institute at the Russian Academy of Sciences said at a news conference in Moscow....

The Russian expert warned there was a 90 percent likelihood that the current form of the H5N1 bird flu virus could mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans."

Don't buy in fear or panic. Think everything through. You should stockpile at least 30 days of supplies. US citizens in Hong Kong were warned to stockpile 12 weeks food and water:

The U.S. Department of State recently sent a cable to all diplomatic and consular posts entitled "Pandemic Influenza: Preparing for Possible Shelter-In-Place". The cable's main intent was to provide guidance to all staff regarding "shelter-in-place". That is, in the event of severe pandemic influenza with high morbidity, the public may be advised to self-quarantine. Therefore, current guidance notes that families should be prepared to "shelter-in-place" for up to twelve weeks, and maintain sufficient food and water supplies to accommodate that entire period.

The posting was later changed to "2 weeks".

I've not looked into the prep-packages that Costco is selling. But some of the best ways to prepare is to create an "Extended Pantry", and rotate the food items into your daily food supply thus keeping them fresh.

Word on the street is that those Cosco emergency kits don't have much in the way of calories, be sure to check before purchasing.

Oh, thanks 4 telling me, I'll look more into it. I went to Costco yesterday and they had samples for it. It was pretty good but the woman worker put too much salt in it.People are stack piling water and toiletries in my city. Its kinda scary cuz i saw some one w/ like 7 cases of water and a Emergency supply kit and like 2 24 roll sizes of toilet paper! I was like wow! This is serious cuz ppl are in a frenzy over the basic food and water necesities! Some ppl got in an arguement over some case of water!

The website:www.birdflu.com, says:
"This is going to be the most catastrophic thing in our lifetime. When this situation unfolds, we will shut down global markets overnight. There will not be movement of goods; there will not be movement of people. This will last for at least a year, maybe two."

This website sells emergeny supplies too, check it out:
www.nitro-pak.com...
Please get prepared everyone! This is serious cuz ppl are already becoming frantic w/the necesities already!

Caringly yours,
Hachi

I'll make sure to stock up. That's really bad though. What about the homeless and those without access to the net or television. How can you get the point across to them. Also, what's best to stock up on? Canned foods? Dried foods? What?

Be careful of fear mongering. There are many websites and snake-oil salesmen that want to profit from from Bird Flu. A general rule of thumb is to stick with non-profits and sites that don't rely on advertising dollars. Don't buy in fear, take some time to figure out the supplies you will need for at least 30 days. Right now you have the time to prepare, not panic. Buy things you can rotate into your regular (daily) food supplies.

I've been following Bird Flu (H5N1) for over a year now. I'm not sure why some of you are encountering people arguing and fighting for supplies. Bird Flu is definitely a threat, however no one knows when, where or even if H5N1 will become pandemic. As of right now Bird Flu is not efficient at transmitting Human-to-Human-to-Human.

As for the expanded-pantry perhaps this list will help:

BASIC PREP LIST FOR ONE MONTH/ONE ADULT
* Water: 30 gallons per person minimum
* Canned meals: 30 cans per person (Pasta meat mixes; Chunky type soups; Chili; etc.)
* Canned/Tinned meat spreads and similar items for sandwiches: 12 cans
* Peanut Butter: 2-3 lbs per person
* Jam/Jelly: 1-2 lbs per person
* Crackers: 4 1 lb. boxes per person (for sandwiches and snacks)
* Canned fruit: 12 cans per person
* Instant breakfast cereal: 30 packs per person
* Vegetable/fruit juices: 1 gallon per person
* Coffee, (2 lb) tea, hot chocolate etc. Consider instant in case no electricity.
* Dry milk: Large box, increase if frequent milk drinker; 2 per child
* Dessert items: Canned or single serve puddings and similar , hard candy, or similar comfort foods and "treats", if funds allow
* Sugar: 5 lbs
* Salt: 1 lb; other spices/condiments as desired
* Baking soda: 1 box

* Tylenol/Acetaminophen: bottle 100
* Ibuprofen: bottle 100
* Multiple Vitamin: 1 bottle/30 day supply

* Antibacterial soap: 1 per sink
* Hand sanitizer:minimum 1 pocket size and one large to refill from
* Bleach- unscented, 1 gallon
* Vinegar: plain, 1 gallon for disinfectant purposes

* Toilet paper 10-15 rolls
* Paper towels; 6 rolls
* Paper plates, cups, disposable silverware
* Manual can opener
* Camp Stove, sterno or other alternative heating method to boil water and fuel
* Flashlights: One per person minimum, consider LED lights to reduce battery usage. Additional LED headlamps extremely useful.
* Radio: battery powered

* Children specific items: Food, formula, diapers, OTC medicines

Thank you! Yes i kno that it is weird that ppl are already fighting over food and water. bUt the sence of the urgency of the matter makes ppl go in to fear mongering. It made me think. Should i buy alot now and secretly hourd or should i just wait till the last minute cuz ppl seem to know something we dont. Oh and I shall look up another website 2 see more things for the emergency supply kits. Man, this must be very serious if people are already fighting!

keep things in perspective, it is possible that people were fighting due to another reason and not Bird Flu. Also, with the potential grassroots movement of trucker strike:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

perhaps people will be stocking up on supplies.

As for Bird Flu, yes, preparing is prudent, but don't panic. We have time.

Also, the best defense is organization and community participation/preparation.

If your tap water is ok, there wouldn't be a need to stock up on water, would there? Just wondering if there's concern over water contamination?

posted on Mar, 27 2007 @ 10:38 AM

The main concerns about water, electricity and gas (as it applies to individual homes and apartments) is that *IF* bird flu goes pandemic, it *COULD* impact 30-40% of the workforce (not kill, but impact (family gets sicks, fear etc)). Thus having repairs done to power, water and gas lines becomes a major task.

As for tap water, tap water require chlorine which is reliant on the JIT (Just In Time) delivery system. The JIT system is the weak-link, and in my opinion ranks right up there with the power grid.

It would be wise to stock some water provisions and/or a water filter, in case deliveries of supplies start to wane or lines break with delayed repairs.

As you start to think about the potential impact it's a very slippery slope (I've been there done that), remember, don't panic. Think thing through. Get as much of the stuff you need. The idea of 1 month supplies is to get things started and buys time if something does in fact happen. Think of it as an emergency supply list for any emergency, but remember in relation to bird flu, current recommendations are 4 months of SIP (shelter in place), if the pandemic strain remains as efficient at killing as it current is.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply! I never thought of it that way. Gosh, I guess something like this can really affect a lot more than you think!

Hmm.. all points r good but, when i walked down that aisle, the people were talking about the bird flu and how they should get things early. So i assume the excessive water buying had to do w/ that. Hmm.. i think bottled water is more helpful than tap. Hmm.. i have a question, If ppl started hourding and looting, would they get in trouble.?? Sorry if it sounds weird but would they??

The only thing I would be stocking up on is Hydrogen Peroxide. You need to get the 35% food grade. This will help you much more than Tamiflu etc. Personally you have more chance of being killed in a car accident than by bird flu - but enjoy the fear mongering.

sure.....did u look at the statistics cuz bird flu has a 50/50 chance. Its always good to be care flu. Wait what is the hydrogen peroxide 4??

posted on Mar, 27 2007 @ 05:34 PM

hydrogen peroxide is for antibactirial perposes, it would help with cuts and scrapes. also it would help stop contamination of the flu itself (if it can travel through blood).
