I may sound ignorant and to the most part I probably am. But I always wanted to read the bible and I have tried several times. I just don't articulate the points they try making in it. For the most part I am ignorant to alot of the teachings in the bible, yet consider myself fairly religious. I guess what I am trying to get at is, are there any good alternatives to read instead of the bible, meaning were translations are easier to comprehend, but still is telling you what the bible is trying to say. Also, what are the differances between old and new testament and king james version? If this doesnt make any sense, let me know. I will try to clarify more.

I enjoy reading their posts in the end times chat forums. Every other day Jesus is coming back its been like that for years.
On a serious note.
Christianity is a personal relationship between you and the lord you dont need farewell or any other false preacher involved to love the lord. Just ask for his salvation read the bible and follow what it teaches.

Give up on the bible; seek other alternatives. The bible isn't the only religious text out there; Christianity isn't the only religious choice out there. Educate yourself on other beliefs, pick one you can understand. Don't accept the dogma of one because you "think" you should.

First of all, the Bible teaches you a lot about human nature. Most of human nature is based on lies, big and little. So is most of the Bible. Catching on yet? Forget the LORD as there's no evidence or REASON for you to worship ANYTHING or ANYONE, unless you want to get suckered in the biggest lie/deception to ever encounter manking: religion. Think for yourself, believing ANYTHING means a LACK of thought. Means give up your thought and let someone else do the thinking for you. You can read it as a story, and there's a new movie about Jesus coming soon so it's like LOTR the movie in a sense, about the Bible though! There ya go! Belief IS ignorance and lack of knowledge. Knowledge and belief don't co-exist, belief just replaces real knowledge with something you imagine to be true, it has killed billions upon billions of people in endless bloody wars and conflicts about whose Invisible Man is cooler (God). So relax, and just learn from life. It's all a big lesson. Also watch out for Patriotism, it's a lot like religion. Suckers you in then bites you in the ass when you realize you did something stupid like go to war, but can't understand exactly why. These are words of wisdom, take them as a warning and a lesson. Don't believe a SINGLE WORD I say, just use your own mind and come to your own conclusions, you'll really be surprised what you may discover.

Its not anything to do with the belief or common relationships between the bible. I am just interested in reading it more extensively. It doesnt mean I wont read other religions text as well. I have a keen interest for the bible because of the stories inside of it, they intrigue me. I am not looking to study it like a textbook, but read it more as a novel.

I for one would like to encourage you, and all the others here who have not done so, to read the Bible. There are many versions out there today that put those old age Biblical terms into an easy to understand reading. I would suggest The Message. This Bible in contemporary language is translated directly from the ancient Hebrew and Greek texts into today's American idiom, The Message is designed as a reading Bible. With no distracting verse numbers or stiff, formal language, the sixty-six books of Scripture unfold like a gripping novel. From the mysterious Old Testament stories to the straightforward teachings of Jesus to the encouraging early church letters, reading The Message will give all the teachings of The Bible of long ago, while not intimidating due to the language that it was written in.

and I never understood it..it made barely any sense to me especially in relation to the *now* times. HOWEVER..recently I became saved and completely accepted Jesus Christ the Son of God into my heart, into my spirit..and let me tell you-reading the bible now is like reading it for the very first time EVER! I am understanding the words and the word of God so much more..but of course, I have a long way to go..this is only the begining for me..

God Bless you in *your* journey as well.

Merry Christmas Dreamz!

"And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" [3]

A lawyer was a Jew who studied and interpreted the law.
He was not like we understand lawyers to be today. They should have been men of character and high moral standing.
Many of them were, but too many were not. This lawyer was like the people Jesus referred to when He said: "But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." [4]
If you know this passage, from St. Luke's gospel, a sentence or so later, a lawyer told Jesus He was judging them too, and Our Lord said `yes, indeed'.

www.orthodox.net...

To read and understand the Bible on our own is pretty confusing for many....and many beleive that they can themselves interpret the passages in the Bible to how they see fit!
How wrong they must be!
We can understand the Bible if we truly seek to know it.....we have early Ancient Christianity that came from the Apostles themselves!
Jesus Christ chose them to teach us the way of the truth and to understand what is written the the Old and New Testament!

The Bible

The Orthodox believe that the Bible is the recorded history of God's relationship to man in human history, and man's response to God. The Orthodox also believe that the Bible was written by persons inspired by God and that it is the word of God.

The Orthodox recognize the Old Testament, New Testament and the Deuterocanonical books, as a source of her doctrine.
The worship services and prayers are based on the Holy Scriptures. In fact, there is not a worship service in the Church that does not read an excerpt from the Bible. Readings from both/either the Old and New Testament are done in each service.
Orthodox Christians are encouraged to read and study the Bible daily. However, interpreting the Bible is not left to the individual but to the Church.

Reading various books on the early fathers of the early centuries ,their life, prayers, fasting, and dedicating their time to show us what and how one should the Bible....

St Seraphim of Sarove was a great teacher of fath and works!
He lived in the forest dedicating his life to helping others and with prayer, fasting and solitude, gave his spirit away to the Lord.....
I have posted about him here at A.T.S
www.abovetopsecret.com...

Although we cannot be like St Seraphim of Sarov, we can learn many things to what a Christian is about, by reading their lives.....
Another great book is called....The Philokalia
www.digiserve.com...

www.christianity-books.com...

Philokalia means love of the good or love of the beautiful. It was the name given to a celebrated 18th-century collection of Greek patristic writings on Christian spiritual life, teaching the path to inner sobriety and the fullness of union with God.

The Philokalia is a collection of texts written between the fourth and fifteenth centuries by spiritual masters of the Orthodox Christian tradition.
First published in Greek in 1782, translated into Slavonic and later into Russian, The Philokalia has exercised an influence far greater than that of any book other than the Bible in the recent history of the Orthodox Church.

If you do as the bible teaches, you will find yourself in alot of legal trouble. Example.... stoning adulterers. The bible was plagarized from Sumerian writings anyway.

The old testament is more historical than anything.
However, the New Testament is important and most good morals and advise can be found, if you know how to read it. I would suggest getting a Devotional Bible. It takes more interesting scriptures and helps put it into perspective. Just a little paragraph on interpreting it and undersyanding how it relates to your life in modern times.
The best version in NIV (new international version), I grew up on the new king james and learned how to understand it and the NIV was a walk in the park in comparison. Open your mind and don't think about the negatives of modern day organized religion- it's just another way to find connection to God.

Good alternative to Bible?
I suggest Qur'an
it has all the New Testament and Old Testament stories in shorter version, plus a few other ones, it has aliens, beings from another dimension, epic battles, other worlds, Big Bang, it all makes the reading very interesting.

People telling you not to read the Bible are clouded by religious ignorance.
The Bible is the most important book ever written and should be examined by every single person who lives in a Christian society.
It doesn't matter if you even believe in God or not.

Why? Well, the Bible is the book that affects your every day life. The way you live. It heralded the creation of our very societies. When you have read and understand the Bible, you are able to put an answer to a lot of things that happen to you and your fellow men. You don't have to read it as a spiritual book if you don't believe, but you should read it as a historical book and look at it's political and social implications.

It is the blueprint for how we live in the West today.
