cool video!! i would like to know the range distance at which these "critters" were shot????? in vietnam carlos hathcock (who had 93 confirmed kills) was killing NVA at over 2000 meters with a 50 cal. 500 meters + on a ground hog would be impressive!!!!

For # sake.

Wouldn't some melons or plastic bottles have worked just as well? A true hunter is skillful and pays reverence because he's aware of what he's had to do, but these guys are just jokers with a big toy. No more adult than a 15 year old punk kid with a BB gun killing birds.

Agreed. The video is yet another proof of some people's total lack of respect for other living creatures. There is no honour in what they are doing. Even if it is to control the population (something I doubt, considering the weapon they are using), they are still blowing up living creatures on film.

Johnny you would like to see a man getting killed instead of prairie dogs? you are even sicker than the shooter on the video

It's not cool to claim that it would be interesting to see a man getting killed, but prairie dogs are living creatures to. Is it really so different to think it's interesting to see a sniper rifle being tested on prairie dogs ?

LOL! I wanted to point that out Tony
Normal varmint calibers are in the .17 to .25 caliber range....which is a LONG way from .50.

For all you ignorant-how-the-world-works PETA-philes, hunters kill an almost insignificant number of P-dogs annually, despite the many hundreds of thousands of varmint hunters out there....me being one of them!

Hunters, on a good day (and depending on the size of the dog-town, which can number in the many thousands), 3-4 hunters will shoot maybe a few dozen, leaving the town practically untouched. However, ranchers and farmers will wipe out an entire town with poison. Even the govt. spreads poison (Compound 10-80) to control the very destructive rodents.

No, we don't keep the meat, we also do not bother keeping what is left of the hide. We do, however, spread out the smorgasbord for raptors, coyotes, snakes, and the other P-dogs...oh yes, P-dogs (and most any rodent) will happily munch down of what is left of cousin Phil. (ever have too many hamsters in a cage?). Living in the wild is a violent proposition. As predators ourselves, we contribute to the food chain in our own way.

BTW, I don't give a whit about your personal relationship with PETA types, or your cat.

For those that are curious, a .50 caliber round fired against a human will most likely remove the head or the better part of the torso at closer range (less than 500 meters), and will still be an effective single shot killer up to the maximum range of the gun (typically better than 2000 meters - however the M82A1A has a range in excess of 7000 meters - roughly 75 football fields, end to end). The .50 cal was developed as an anti-armor round, not as an anti personnel round. That said, firing such a round at the soft body of a human is going to pretty much disintegrate a large part of the target.

This site contains several videos of .50 caliber rifle fire, including a Marine Corps training video for the M82A1A using both conventional and incendiary/explosive rounds. It pretty well demonstrates the effectiveness of the rifle. The video includes footage of .50 caliber rounds penetrating a 3.5" thick steel manhole cover, light vehicle armor, a safe, cynderblocks, and bulletproof glass. Knowing how much more resistant to penetration these materials are over the human body, one can only imagine the damage to soft flesh.

those shots were not made with the .50 caliber rifles. Most varmit hunting as Armys states is done with .17 to .25 caliber rifles. The most popular being around .220 Swift, .22-250 and .223 calibers. These are very high velocity rifles with sporting type ammunition..meaning expanding or hollowpoint bullets. In my .223 rifle I load a Hornady V-max plastic tipped bullet at 52 grains.
At these velocitys there is a substantial shock wave accompanying the bullets along with the expansion. If you notice there is almost no delay between the firing of the bullet and the impact indicating very fast velocitys.
As to all the animal peoples out there....out west these prarie dogs are known as nusance critters and often burrough through the dirt making huge networks of holes and hives below ground. Often livestock and horses step into these holes and injure themselves and must be disposed of. Prarie dogs are also like rabbits very fast breeders. You can often see them right in the middle of towns like Albequerque, New Mexico making homes in vacant lots and expanding out to new territories. Hence the position of most local governments on them as nusance critters. They are happy to get rid of them.
Remember the plight of the donkeys in the Grand Canyon years ago. The animal lovers had the excess flown out to new homes at $10.000 a pop by helicopters...on public expense. Hunters could have done the job much better. This kind of thing is done around here on military reservations when the deer populations get out of control and they become a nusance and hazard to themselves and vehicles. Reservations are opened up to controlled hunting till the numbers are reduced to levels managable by the available land. People right here across town are screaming about the deer populations expanding and foraging into peoples yards and eating thier shrubbery and flowers. Yet ironically they scream about controlled hunting but want someone else to do something about it. Pitiful.

Thanks,
Orangetom

Shameful, hopefully PETA has not see this footage.

This is like hunting deer or wild pig with a M1A1 tank.
Not that a tanker would miss use a multi-million dollar weapon system.
Remember the BBQ is better if you coax, do not use the main gun. The explosive residue ruins the meat... LOL ...

This weapon was orginally designed for SF sniper teams. The theory was to give the infantry a tool to kill Warsaw Pack tank commanders in there tanks at range. A gift from heaven. How much protection does a cement block wall or tree provide Muhammad against a M82. Little...

Just for your information. A human looks about the same as that dog when hit. But in warfare, there are things worse than this. For example a direct hit with a MK19. They rarely kill an individual instantly; they bleed to death after a few minutes. I believe there is movie footage in Black Hawk Down which is about a real as it get. The only thing missing is the smell and taste.

Real men hunt prey that shoot back...

Here are some links for specifications on both the M82 and MK19 if anyone is interested

It's sick how much power they can put out, but definately an asset to any army that wields them.

HELLOOOOOO? Anybody home? Hey guys..the original post is NOT a .50 cal!

Just in case you missed it.

BTW, I've seen terrs that have been, and watched get, shot with a .50...they do NOT come apart like tissue paper...contrary to popular belief and myth. FMJ .50 ammo simply displaces a lot of flesh, but without the mythical "blown in three pieces" effect. I've also seen more than a few terrs with their heads popped from .30 cals....they don't look much different.

And for particulars....The range of the .50 does not change with what weapon it is launched from. The effective range is 2500m, it's total FLIGHT distance is over 7000m. While still deadly when it comes back down from that far away, it is not considered effective. While the .50 was indeed designed as an anti-armor weapon during WWI (design completed in 1921, adopted in 1927), there has never been a directive prohibiting its use against personnel.

As for hitting a human with the HEDP round from a MK19....it very much takes a human apart.
