Instead of spending exorbit amounts of money on weapons and bombs why not spend the mony bettering civilization, I regret the atom bomb and one day it is going to destry the one thing humans strive for and that is survival.

Dont get me wrong I love guns and bombs, but they are unneccesary, but I guess in the end u cant live forever, so why not go with a bang.

So...if war is not the answer, what *is* the answer?

Or, to put this a different way, what should we spend 'exorbit' (exorbitant, perhaps?) amounts of money on? Give some suggestions, rather than a feel-good bit of emotional tripe like "bettering civilization". Don't forget to include human nature in your plans, though. If you create an island of 'civilization' and 'prosperity' in a sea of deprived humanity (or deprived nations) that lacks the ability to defend itself, your neighbors are much more likely to steal what you have, than go to the trouble of getting it by more troublesome (to them, at least) methods.

Lest you think that I'm 'just being mean', here's a suggestion: Rewrite your question in a more reasonable form (Something along the lines of "How much military spending could be diverted to more beneficial causes?" might work), and provide us with your ideas about an answer. As a secondary suggestion, be prepared to support your ideas.

i also which that governments would slash the amount of spending for military purposes.

but how much can you really expect when it is human nature to feel threateded by what you don't know , so i guess it is only natural for the americans and many other countries around the world to be paranoid by someone invading them.

A country cannot just one day decide to stop making weapons, b/c not every other country would go along w/ that. Then after the country got rid of its weapons, it would definitely be invaded and taken over. The whole idea of a world w/o weapons, though a nice thought, would result in chaos.

As much as I hate war and despise the concept of lording over one another, as a nation we have to have a military to defend ourselves, because if we stood by and shifted our focus on spending money to domestic issues in order to create the very best quality of life for everyone in our country, the world would build militaries and come in and take all that away from us.

I hate to say that what works is tit for tat in the global game, which is why America does spend so much on weapons. The problem is not our leaders are evil, but they have to do this or someone else will come in and take what we do have. I am not saying that people in power may not take advantage of their positions, but it is a necessary evil that we build weapons of war as we are still only human. If we were immortal, no one would need weapons, because they would be useless.

That is b.s. If you look through out history, it is always the dominant military force that does the invading. You will not see Mexico invading the US anytime soon. It's always about the money or the plunder, now they just have it under other names for tax purposes.

It's not what you can use the money for, because there are plenty of good causes that lack the money the military drains out of the economy.

Just a thought, look at Canada, they spend almost nothing on their military and they have never been invaded or attacked..

It's always the rich nation attacking the poor, it's for the money. You have to think about turnover, if you build ten rockets, you need to use them to justify building ten more rockets. That is a fact.

I wasn't talking about how it actually is, but what defense is supposed to be. I agree that power hungry people always take advantage of what they are given and use it to extract everything they can for themselves and anyone else who will reciprocate and kickback favors towards them.

I was stating what defense should be, but you are right - those with the weapons do their own bidding.

As for Canada, it is common knowledge that they can never be attacked as they are too close to the US geographically for any hostile force to take them as well as the fact that they have a pro-US government. If they were not sucking the US mammary glands, the US would find a way to attck them and install a government friendly to us. No one will attack Canada or Mexico as they would then have to basically do whatever the US wants. The borders across Canada and Mexico don't mean anything so far as trade and resources go.

Learn to love the bomb!

Theres not a doubt in my mind if there was no Atomic weapons developed after WW2 that NATO and WARSAW would have went to war during the cold war. Take nuclear Weapons out of the equation and there are many winable scenarios most of which favored the Soviets IMO.

There would be no balance with powers like the Soviets and the Chinese, NATO would have been #$%@#@

A Nuclear weapon deflection blast is also really the only practical or realistic way for stopping a large asteroid or comet impact on earth. Sure scientist have "theories'' of others ways to stop them but without decades of warning they will not work not even counting R&D time. When dealing with Comets we are not going to have such a large warning. A large impact WILL happen again is not even a question its only a matter of time.

Learn to love Military R&D dollars!

There are so many things we use in civilian life today that owe their invention or development to military programs.

The Rocket ( every space program)
The Jet engine
GPS
Radar
Helicopter
Fiber optics
Modern Computers
The Transistor (thus really all modern electronics)
Nuclear energy
Canned food
Teflon

etc.... we have military dollars and programs to thank for it
