Once when flying a Cessna near Kailua-Kona Hawaii, I witnessed 3 humpback whales playing below me, had to circle for a while!

The coolest thing I have ever seen from an a/c is another thing.

I have done the whale thing when transiting down the California Coast. But the best I have ever seen is flying high in the chopter over the golden gate bridge on a totaly clear night with a full moon and having the lit up SF Bay Area fill the view screen

One of the coolest things I've seen was standing 6 inches behind a 13 and a half foot propeller spinning at 1020 rpms. Looking for leaks on a engine while it's spinning is fun.

Driving along in Fife, Scotland high up on the side of a valley, and jets screaming along low in the valley, lower than the car is. Looks amazing

Near Nellis AFB, I had an Apache gunship come up from behind and below a ridge! I had no idea it was there and all of a sudden I turned around (actually 3 of us) and there is this chopper, literally 40-50 yards away, and pointing straight at us with the ball gun moving as if targeting us. Needless to say it was quite intimidating, and I still can't figure how we never heard it. it must have been due to the ridge and that it was below us and coming up I suppose!? Anyway, the pilot and gunner slowly rotated to the right and saluted us all and that was it....damn it was impressive!!!

Peace, Mondo

I have also had the opportunity to watch a low level in flight refueling demo by a KA6D and an F18 at Pt. Mugu NAS. It was at about 1,000 ft. and at very low speed. the drogue and probe were not attached, but were within a foot or two it seemed to give the select crowd an idea of what it was like! Very cool to see, especially with these two aircraft being about the same size and all!
Come to think of it, the Intruder is a cool looking aircraft isn't it!

Peace, Mondo

I also saw the shuttle piggy backed to a 747, fly over, while working outside, one day.

Talk about a Triple-Take.

I thought it was surprising how the 747 seemed to dwarf the Shuttle.

And I'm usually either, on my roof, or at NAS Oceana, to catch the Blue Angels every year.(Although sometimes the Canadian Snow Birds substitute.)

Those babies ain't exactly quiet when 6 of 'em scream by, 100' over the treetops.

The Hercules, C-140(?), is pretty impressive, with it's short take off (jet-assist) maneuver. I forget the numbers, but that is a massive
hunk o' metal to get airborn, in 2-300(?) ft.

Hi guys, I stumbled upon this as I was looking for photos of Vulcans!
I see someone mentioed Finningley. I grew up there, yes in a house very close to the airfield. My Dad was one of the Vulcan bomber pilots and had an active role in a few of the famous "Battle of Britain" shows that Finningley hosted each year.

One of the most memorable moments was one show, back in the 60's,, where "Dr Who and the Daleks" was the theme. The RAF pilots helped the Doctor by " bombing" (not real of course), the Daleks and I saw all the action from the VIP tent. My Dad had a starring role. Ah such an exciting time!! Just thought I would share this with you all!

Back in the 60s the Air Force used to spray our area with C-130s.
/3ltb32

The planes whiz by at 200 mph and 150 feet from the ground to diffuse about a half-ounce of the chemical Dibrom per acre, said Mitch Burcham, pest control supervisor with Langley Air Force base. It dissipates so quickly that it poses almost no risk to humans, he said.

So, this is my entry. When you're standing in your back yard and one flies over you at this intensity you just want to dive for the ditch. If you're in bed in the morning and they fly right over your house, you're under the bed when you realize it and wonder how you got there!

I kid you not.

You could see the guys in the plane, and wave at them. Our house was right in line with the pass too so it was mega-up close and personal.

That's the new C-130J. Beautiful bird. You can tell by the curved props.

As to the coolest thing I've seen, I have way too many to mention. One of the best was standing 8500 feet down runway 8R at 1030 at night watching 4 B-1Bs make full afterburner takeoffs 30 seconds apart.

Duh...Sorry, I just grabbed the closest C-130 pic I could find. I suppose the 1960s version was similar.

BTW you got mine beat...did you get any pics? (praying you did)

That would be awesome...

Oh, just re-read...at night. Guess not. But it probably was all the more beautiful!

I have about 40+ original prototype photographs, and prints that I believe are in crayon, from like the 40's from North American Aviation Inc.. Here are scanned pics of some of my favorites, and the envelope they came in.

Hmm, so many I can remember!

The most recent one, I went outside a few months ago. I heard a very loud engine and looked around to see what was around and I was stunned to see a B-17 fly over my house. Turns out there was a vintage airplane show stopping for a few days at the local airport. I drove out there and got to go inside the B-17 and a few other old planes.

Then when I was in high school I was very active in the ROTC and had the chance to visit several Air Force bases. Two highlights stand out from that; on one trip I got to sit inside the cockpit of a B-2, on another I was standing on one of the runways and watched as a Mobile Airborn Command Center landed after being releived of its duty, and a diplomatic Russian Military plane landed shortly therafter.

And then there was that invisible airplane I saw a couple months back...

Externally they're the same thing. The differences between the models, unless you know are very small. The A model was a very strange looking bird. It had a funny nose, and three bladed props. From the B model on they were almost identical externally. They had the fuel tank outboard of #1 and #4 on one model, but the others all had the tank between #1 and #2 and #3 and #4. The J model was the first major change. They went to a 6 bladed prop instead of a 4 bladed prop, and instead of a paddle style prop they used a scimitar prop. That minor change led to a huge performance change. A C-130H flying from Hawaii, and ending the trip in Georgia, with two external fuel tanks has to stop in California to refuel (or at least once somewhere), a C-130J with no external tanks had just enough fuel to go non-stop to Georgia.

C-130E:

C-130H:

C-130J:

Now THIS is interesting. A C-130H in February was fitted out with NP-2000 8 blade propellors in support of Operation Deep Freeze.

I saw one of these it was really weird just the way it flies so strange. It was at Sky Harbour Airport in Phoenix of all places ,and I was raised on Air Force bases!

I saw an Airbus A380 flying about 2000ft above the river near where I live. An awesome spectacle, such a massive plane. It flew so slowly, teetering as it went, finally disappearing from view as it followed the bend of the river.

Concorde was pretty cool, saw it every year. They should have let Branson refurbish them.

Talking of Branson, Virgin Galactic is almost upon us...

The guy in the last vid was awesome. He's Peter Besenyei, a Hungarian ace and by the looks of it was in his late 40s or early 50s when that vide was done.

Born in 1956.

Cool!

BTW, he worked with Red Bull to start the competition in 2001. So you probably know who he is.

This is a great thread.

I'd like to ask that those who post do us enthusiasts a favor and post a pic of the plane you are talking about from a Google image search or something. If you've posted here and want to go back and find an image for your previous posts and stick up a new post as a 'reply to' and put in some images that would be cool. Just remember:

1. The image size can't be bigger than 680x680, and the image has to be hosted on a site like Photobucket or Tinypic.com or Imageshack for it to be embedded.

Anyone needing help can contact me and I'll assist.

And, if you'd be so kind, try to add in some terms for the layman, maybe a little blurb at the end of your comments about some of the obscure terms you use, because pilots have a type of 'pilot-speak' that isn't that easy to understand.

I hope we can continue this thread.

I've only flown in one light plane, a Piper Cub, we called it Ninety-nine Charlie, I think because the tail number ended in 99C.

It probably looked like this:

I was only about 13 at the time so I don't remember much. I think it was sliver and red.

Rollercoasters SUCK!!! In an aircraft, you get a FANTASTIC view, there's no idiots screaming, you are in complete control... the forces are MUCH more intense and LONGER lasting, you're going 5 times as fast, the sound of a 1500hp Radial is so awesome too!!! I guess if you feel sick then it would be horrible... but that has never and will never happen with me.

Was using a crappy disposible camera.... ran out of film half way.

If you ever get the chance to do anything like this, take it, you won't regret it.

Fantastic pics, C0bzz.

Liked the comment you made about the roller coaster.

For some reason I just can't pull Gs.

This ride is about the limit of the intensity I can stand. Yeah, go ahead and laugh.

It's in Kennywood one of the last of its type. Oddly they had some pretty hair-raising wooden rollercoaster rides. I know I'd just die if I went on one of those.

To keep this on topic I used to stand on the ground and watch this. I'd never dare get into one of those:
