i was watching discovery last night and wow who needs nuclear weapons with these?

apparently drop one of these weapons above the united states and america would be at a stand still (cars and everything) theres no defence to it either and america's military advantage will be wiped away in just a blink of an eye.

which nations possess these weapons?

Sorr for the short response, but there is a defense against an EMP attack.

Wikipedia: Faraday Cage

As for known countries that are known to posses them: US, Russia and the UK. Supposedly only the Soviets had produced any substantial amounts of these weapons, which also the majority of which have been "supposedly" disarmed. Basically any nation who can create a nuclear weapon can create a makeshift EMP weapon.

Any nuclear capable nation has an EMP weapon, there are ways to reproduce this effect to a smaller degree but its more dangerous and not as elegant as dropping a bomb.

What do you think it would do to the UK?

Anyway, sensitive military installataions as well as aircraft are protected from EMP. think about it, they would have to be if they were going to retailiate after having a bomb detonate on mainland USA.

puts us at a stand still no-more no-less than anyone else and military equipment are not protected

thats why ground troops must be trained in every situation and why its always a good advange to have ships/equipment/subs/aircraft/carriers in different areas around the globe.

but if an EMP attack did happen on a nation that country is screwed anyway and won't recover finanically.

i don't really think thats a defence against it mate, not a whole nation anyway.

maybe that is ok to save the power for 1 street, i'm not too sure

ive not looked too much into it but i know it said on discovery there isn't a defence against an emp attack.

Too much TV is not good for you, there are indeed several "defenses" against EMP radiation, from conventional to asymmetrical. The US government and military have know about the effects of high altitude (large) nuclear blasts since the 1960's. As such, all critical and strategic US military, government and civilians instillations and weapon systems are most likely shield from such an effect (and have been so for quite some time). So no you would not wipe Americas military advantage in the "blink of an eye" you would however likely end your county's existence as we now know it.

And I don't know what you saw but they clearly said that only an enhanced (large eyelid) nuclear explosion at very high altitude above the CONUS can have such an effect. So you do indeed need nuclear weapons, and you would need to use them...

Also, it is not practical, feasible or economical to shield an entire country from such an attack, especially one as large as the United States. So while most civilian infrastructure and systems would be devastated the (conventional) military will still be able to function, albeit at a reduced capacity for some time.

Below is a text link I found that talks about EMP weapons and speaks a lot to a test site for them on Eglin, AFB. I know exactly where that site is, but I don't think it has been doing a lot of active testing in years. What really peaked my interest is that the linked article talks about EMPs rumored being used to shoot down UFOs.

The research lab on Eglin was connected with Regan's "Star Wars" effort years ago, but that lab is on a portion of the test range's beachfront property, and is probably no more than 25 miles east of Gulf Breeze, FL, where you surely know has been a hotbed for UFO sightings.

Here is some information on the EM test facilities at the white sands missile range.

The SVAD operates extensive Electromagnetic (EM) Environmental Effects (E3) Test facilities to support the requirements for test and evaluation of weapons systems while being subjected to electromagnetic environments.

Hope this info helps someone
