If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color, pink. If you stare at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green. Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you're lucky! It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear. This should be proof enough, we don't always see what we think we see.

Really cool effect- Get a strobe light and have it illuminate a dark room with a ceiling fan. Mess around with fan/light speeds and get some neat results. If they are perfect, the fan will look like its not moving but when you touch it you know otherwise. Have fun.

I think it really has to do with focus. As you focus on the center the periferal motion causes a secondary focus. Your mind relates to 2 directions at once. Most people probably find themslves moving away from the center and having to refocus on the point. The time spent doing it allowes you to sink in (hypnotize if you will) so when you look away your focus is torn between the 2 states. How your brain deals with that mainifests itself by your perception is the "breathing" effect you see. As you regain focus to one state the effect fades. I hate to say this and it dates me but it is very similar to the effects that people described when they were on '___'.

Oh man!!...this is so cool...plus, its cost effective...
