Because temperature and humidity in the atmosphere varies - even over short distances at the same altitude. Hence it's not uncommon to see a
contrail form from a passenger jet, and dissolve in places to leave broken segments of persistent contrail.
When you take into account variations over altitude - and the fact that from the ground an aircraft at 22,000ft and one at 25,000ft may appear to be
at the same height - it all becomes perfectly explicable.
Indeed, the 'chemtrail conspiracy' falls on this point because how does it explain such things? How can a chemtrail form and then only partially
dissolve?
