1. Middle class taxpaying families would be included in her proposed bill. They are not losing out in the least.
2. Its the government's job to educate the populace which is why public school is in place. If it wasnt the government's job to put people through school, our education system would be completely privatized.

So quick to turn something into a "them vs. us".....

God, I knew it was only a matter of time when there would be a pathetic liberal attempt to pull out the "race card."

How in God's name is this racism? That WE Americans don't want OUR hard-earned tax money to go to illegals rather than legal Americans, whom many, have deep financial need to go to college as well.

Liberals... no better word to describe 'em.

You manage to avoid the core of this issue very well.
1. Who cares? The truth is, my education is paying for itself and a large majority of the college graduates are in the same situation. The US is in debt up to our eyeballs. The government in would in essence be transferring its debt to its most capable payers (college educated people) by not paying for their education. There is lots of private, state, and local money available for those who really need it.
2. Debatable. And, what you stated is not a logical argument; like saying if it wasn't my job to take out the trash, a maid would do it. That doesn't prove its my job to take out the trash anymore than what you said makes it the government's job to educate. Our government was founded by people who thought the federal government's job was defense, keeping the peace, and promoting trade. To my knowledge, sending dollars to Washington never made them more effective. In fact, most look more favorably on those with a private education than a public. The success of school voucher programs in places like Milwaukee speak volumes about where people would rather have their kids. If people had the billions they are putting into government for education anyway, they would most likely choose a private school, given one that reflects their ideological view (which would certainly spring up given a demand). I do think it is in our nations interest to promote learning, as ideas are our greatest export. But the way we do it sucks. It should be done through grants to the best and the brightest and putting pressure on industry to provide assistance to their future workers (many companies are already very good).

3. All of this doesn't even speak to issue here. I must assume that you attack my side arguments since you cannot defend giving illegals OUR money; which I cannot even think of an argument I would respect to defend that so I don't blame you. If they want education here, return to mexico, get a student visa, and apply for scholarships as every other country's students have to.

Why would you want to entice more people to enter illegally by giving them cheaper tuition?

If she wants to give illegals money then she can be the first to sell her nice house, nice cars, give up her coast to coast jet and fund the first batch of illegals through school. Her supporters also should set an example by selling their luxury items and non-essentials. Put your money where your mouth is...it's easy spending other people's taxed income and saying: "Here you poor illegals, this is a gift from Nancy Pelosi".

Because demoncrats need more minorities to victimize so they can continue to have legitimacy. The democratic party is the primary source of racism in this country. That is evident by their playing the race card on nearly every issue every chance they get. Get rid of the democratic party and liberals no longer have political power. That is when you will see most racism disappear.

You don't actually think the demoncrats are going to apply the same standards to themselves that they expect everyone els to follow, do you? Just think of other regimes in history (and currently) that make rules for all the worthless pions that they think are below them. We can start with any dictator in history and follow up with communist leaders. Ohh, don't forget those socialists as well. And finally, the creme de la creme, Nazis. They expect everyone else to saccrifice this, that, and the other thing while, at the same time, they themselves live high and mighty. Pay close attention. The evidence is everywhere!

I think there's a misunderstanding about the terms "legal resident" and "illegal alien". There are something like 8 immigration classifications in the US and you can be perfectly "legal" without being a resident. The two largest immigration classes would be student and business visas, then there's migrant workers, religious workers, entrepreneurs, refugees, orphans, etc.

Right now, if you lived in the US on an immigration visa (vs. permanent resident) your children have to pay out-of-state charges for college tuition even though you've been paying your taxes in-state. This proposal is not giving "illegals" anything, it's simply allowing families that have raised their children through a state school system and paid their taxes, to get the same tuition rate as everyone else in the state. Yes, there will probably be some illegals that will take advantage of it but they would need a false social security number to do it, and if they have that.. guess what.. they don't need this legislation.

Right now the state of GA is facing budget cuts to higher education due to Bush slashing everything he can to support his outrageous Iraq and Afghanistan spending.

I can not believe that we pay taxes and our taxes are going out the country . . . and now is brake time for illegals?

Outrageous.

I don't believe that the democrats won the congress to cater to outsiders, they were elected because American are tired of everything that is going in this country, from illegal immigration to wars.

I know what you mean Marge!!

I will hardly be able to make it through the next 4 years of college with the prices .. they rise every year.. about 6% or so.. and do I get a break? NO. I fill out the forms and I check the White box and enter how much I make and my age and my gender and DENIED. Suppose I should say I am Latino and demand proof that im not if they say other wise! Though I am on my second free year on a scholarship that runs out and four more years of ungodly tuition fees... *cries*

Education is the ONLY service I even think illegals are entitled to, as children any ways, because no human should be deprived of knowledge, but I think this crosses the line.

Illegal invaders should not be allowed to go to school or college here at all. They have no right to be here.

There is a way to do this without infringing upon the rights of naturalized citizens: Private Universities. Not only would you drive down the prices but you would also do away with diploma mills. Pure competition would get rid of bad professors and return the pride to universities.

In my view, this is a very ignorant argument. Yes, illegal immigrants would be getting some tax money to go to school and become better educated. I agree with the fact that we are up to our eyeballs in debt because of the trillion dollar blunder that they call Iraq, as well as the rediculously timed tax cuts. If we stopped throwing our money down the Iraq toilet and raised taxes a little bit to bring us out of debt, we would be in a much better situation to give a little bit of money to help educate the public.

Although I do understand where you are coming from in terms of illegal immigrants, I believe in equal opportunity - especially for something so necessary and important as an education. If an illegal immigrant succeeds in school enough to be accepted into a college, they deserve an equal opportunity to get an education. Denying them that because we can't kick in another $10 bucks in tax money is simply selfish.

Oh yea, and dont blame liberals/democrats for where we are today. Bush&Co. has had free reign with the Republicans to do whatever he wants for the last 6 years.

Its not selfish, its the truth. If you paid your way into a movie but someone else sneaks in and when caught they are allowed to stay you'd be mad too. I attend a private school and do receive some money as a form of a grant for not going to a public school, but not all of my money that is allocated to that program comes back. I pay for other people in this country to goto school, why should I pay for someone who does not pay taxes to go as well.

If we had a consumption tax, I would feel differently. They would pay taxes upon the goods that they buy and would then have a right to the services that the government provides. However under the current system to give them a break on tutition to a public university is charity on behalf of the people, not from the politicians pockets. Also, most FAFSA and other governmental programs promoting the public school system, though not created by liberals have been championed by them and fully supported, though wholly inefficient.

Allow me to remind you of the terms and conditions

Wanna call me a racist again? I want an apology or I will report you.

[edit on 20-2-2007 by MooneyBravo]

I didn't call you a racist....I asked a question...You were the one that automatically took offense...I gave you another option....So, you will get no apology from me..

Save your threats for someone who will be affected by them....

What about the people who automatically assumed I am a liberal?

Anger is not your friend.....

To get back ON topic...

I don't see what the big deal is. It clearly states "for young people," then throws out the "including illegals."

Why don't you have your kids do well in school and get scholarships? Teach your kids to take that responsibility. When it comes down to it, who do you think the government would give the edge to? Would it be an American citizen who has done their part not only for the community, but themselves by doing well in school, or an illegal alien?

The govenment already has systems in place to benefit those who seek it's help.

The issue at hand is helping ALL young people out. Yet, some of you ignorant folks only read the part about illegals...

Isn't this site's motto "Deny Ignorance?"

OK people I am outraged at this news, I am of Hispanic origin and Spanish is my first language . . .

So yes I oppose illegal immigration and gratification for braking the law.

I am a racist? . . .

I am just a mad American Spanish women with the burden of having not government assistance to pay for my kids college education.

1. Mandatory jail time for employers knowingly hiring illegals.

2. Guard the border. Open fire on those trying to illegally enter.

3. Don't vote for Democrats or anyone of any party who thinks we should educate illegals with our tax dollars.

Simple, speedy and effective. Sadly, no politician has the guts to do the first two simple things on the list. We therefore should force their hand with #3.

Is this supposed to be surprising?
We have a president who doesn't care about the border issue and a democratic led house that thinks he should do more to allow illegals in the country!! This doesn't surprise me in the least. It just furthers my opinion that elected officials don't give a dinker's damn about the future or the security of our country.

You mean for the US army?

Do you really think that illegal immigrants would die for America!? If the USA came under threat in war I bet they'd all just run off back to their 'home' countries!

Here are some points we can agree on:
1. The costs of a higher education are rising too rapidly and need to be reduced
2. It would be better for immigrants to come into the country legally.

This means we must reduce tuition costs for public schools and make the process of becoming a citizen faster and less expensive.

And once again Pelosi's bill covers all students in public higher education, and does not single out illegal immigrants. The title of this post sounds like a FOX News headline...misleading and biased

Thank you. That is all I was saying. But, be careful, I got reported for calling someone a racist....

If all young people have a chance to get to college easier, then what is the problem?

How hard is it to read the part that I bolded in the original quote?
