Obviously, in the religious forum, so far only the religious aspects to marriage have been discussed. Let us not also forget that marriage is likewise a societal union as well.

A government sees a marriage between a man and a woman as a continuing legacy of it's existence, as it is bound to likely lead to procreation, and more citizens. It is this societal contribution made by the couple, that is responsible for tax breaks, congratulatory letters from the president, special economic breaks to married couples, etc. It is because by the two marrying, they are ensuring the future of the society.

This is one of the prime reasons same sex marriages will take time to be legalized. It isn't about religion as much as you may think, I'd wager.

Yep, with same sex marriages, procreation in the biological sense is practically impossible. (leaving out cloning, that is...
)
