I heard it was cancelled.

I would like to see the Barrett M468.

www.youtube.com...

It has a 6.8 round compared to a XM8's or M16 5.56 round.

GALIL, Problem solved, you can thank me later uncle sam.

the M468 is a good gun but in fetchers i like the xm8 due to the fact it can turn into 7 different types of weapons and is easier to clean and has the quick draw ammo recycle.
If it did get canceled it would be a shame and not to menchen it has a unique design.

Galil is a fine assault rifle, but it's considered to be outdated. Even IAF is phasing it out, and is using mostly M-16/M-4, and Tavor is on the way. But if you'd ask me, I'd prefer Galil over M-16/M-4, anytime!

Yup, though the main reason they are using the m16/4 is because they got it CHEAP from us, the GALIL is rather exp compared to a standard AK

The Tavor from what I've seen seems to be a neat little Carbine, how it holds up in battle we shall see, but I doubt the Israeli's would field anything that wasn't up to the job.

The HK 417 (and 416) is the best thing I've seen in a while.

This explains it pretty well, and they even have some examples in 6.8SPC

I like how in the HK 417 and XM8 the accuracy and sights and the piston stays relatively clean after a few rounds.
But its a shame with he recoil i was hoping some shock absorber would be created for the 21century that reduces the recoil on the standard assault rifles.
But all in all i like the look of the xm8 and its functions but now that i have seen the HK 417 i am starting to feel the love for it to.

I think the greatest advance in rifle lethality is the An94 with its two rounds before recoil impacts. With the increasing strength of body armour which already can defeat 7.62x39 rounds i cant see how the 6.8 round can penetrate that much more than the ak round.

Tomcat, I'm no expeert but the 6.8 is higher velocity than the 7.62 and smaller which contributes to armor piercing. the 6.8 is also smaller and lighter than the 7.62 so more ammo can be carried, and existing M16/AR15s can be easily chambered for it. Bigger isn't better for armor piercing, check out the 4.6x30mm round HK developed for weapons like the MP7. That round can go clean through a kevlar helmet

Sad to see the XM8 get scrapped back in 2005. Heckler and Koch have been working on the HK 416 in its place. Looks like a pretty amazing rifle in my opinion.

I saw a Discovery Military Channel show last night that featured the Tavor, and it was pretty impressive. Compact and lightweight, but rugged, accurate and hard-hitting, with a high rate of fire. The Israeli Light Bird interviewed for the show joked about keeping the IDF veterans from stealing all the recruits' Tavors to replace their M-4s.

The ex-SEAL guy narrating the show made a nice supported off-hand headshot on a target at 300 meters with the thing. There are several good choices here. I like the Tavor for how compact and versatile it seemed, without sacrificing range, accuracy and power.

This rifle is based upon the H&K G36 which is in my opinion the best combat rifle in the world and I've fired most NATO rifles including:

MP5
SA-80 A2
SIG SG-543
Steyr AUG A1
C7A1
G36 (The best)

So I hope this xm8 becomes mainstream

Isnt the mp-5 a sub machine gun? Anyways isnt the U.S. special forces are also adopting the scar rifles to replace the m-4s?

Why the next US stormrifle will be from the German company HK, what about the US brands like Colt,S&W,Browning or whatever? I mean i like it thats from HK but in the past the americans are always a bit patriotic and they buy only american stuff.

I get where you're coming from, but personally i would choose the best overall weapon out of all the manufacturers. Not just because its an american company. I really, really, liked the xm-8. I just hope they didnt cancel it because of money,or giving the contract to a "friend" ,as we have done before.

First, its actually untrue that the US military would only "buy American". There is an awful lot of foreign equipment in the American inventory. The specific difference however is that Instead of simply buying a complete foreign system, they often adapt and integrate certain components only - which means that in much of the military gear you may find non-US components, but the whole system is still designed and built in the US. And WHEN they adapt a "complete" foreign system, they usually enforce extensive modifications to "americanize" said equipment.

Now, to the gun thingy. The problem with the big American firearms companies is that they simply stopped to be inventive. The most obvious of these is Colt, a company that still only sells pimped out versions of 50- to 100 years old weapons. And those companies that ARE inventive do not have the market power, finances nor the manufacturing capabilities to truly offer products for the military - thats a painstaking and incredibly difficult process, and often the one with the best lobbyists win, not the best product.

Jesus Christ...the "next American stormrifle"....the United States Military is not a bunch of stormtroopers...and this is not Star Wars....

Someone asked if the US Special Forces were replacing their M-4s with the SCAR...that is correct...in fact, most US Special Operations Units are allowed to carry whatever the heck they want. They select their weapons based on the environment, the mission, and what type of enemy they face..

In Iraq, I've seen them carry the SCAR, AK-47s, M-4s, M-16A4's,M-14s, etc. and a countless host of sidearms ranging from the M-9, to the Colt 1911, etc...

Those "operators" as they so call themselves, have the freedom to pretty much carry whatever they want...they can wear commercial body armor, uniforms, weapons, you name it....

Yes, yes...this is pure jealousy speaking...but hey...I actually LOVE my M-4...=) I'd take it anywhere, anytime...

But I do get jealous of my Special Forces friends...they get to test new toys, and they get to carry whatever they want....>=|

The HK XM8 was a turd of a rifle. You could literally flex most of the rifle with your bare hands. It is based off of the G36, and that is also a crap rifle. They are inaccurate. They flex WAY too much, and the handguards crack. The optics absolutely suck on the G36.
The next standard rifle for the military will be a M16 with a gas piston. I don`t see Big Green going away from the 5.56mm. I feel that they should go to the 6.8mm and I feel the 7.62 NATO should make more of a come back. It is a far superior round.

Killswitch, never heard any of that which you're claiming. Have links? Personal experience? Can you prove you've tested the weapons in these conditions?

I've heard mostly positive things about the XM8 and especially the G36 which to me is an amazing weapon. If it's as bad as you say it is, then why do the Germans stand by it as they do? It's become a popular weapon and is in use in many forces.
