I saw an interesting item on the local news tonight (CHBC British Columbia). It involved a set of gravely ill sextuplets who, it was decided by doctors, required blood transfusions in order to survive. The parents religious beliefs (Jehovah) conflicted with this treatment. Three of the six infants have died because of lack of treatment, so the government ruled that it was in the best interest of the children to have the transfusions. The parents feel they have been wronged by the government. For me this is a no-brainer. Anybody who would sit idly by and watch as their children die should be thrown in the deepest, darkest place imaginable and never let out. I would be very interested to see what everybody else has to say on this matter.

It's one thing for an adult to refuse a transfusion for themselves; they have the ability to consent or not, as they desire. These babies have no way of knowing what is happening, and no way of making an informed decision. In such a case, I think the doctors are right to make the choice that gives the babies a greater chance at survival, whether the parents like it or not.

Hey I think the welfare of the childen should come before the religious beliefs of the parents. It may be against their religion but I couldn't let my child die. I hope they make the right decision. I heard they are looking into other means to help their children, like artifical blood. I don't know the long term effects or if it is even avalable or safe to use. Anyway the parents have some tough decisions to make. I hope they do the right thing.
