Any thoughts on movies you thought should have received the Oscar for Best Picture, but didn't?

Here are a few off the top of my head:

The Shawshank Redemption
Saving Private Ryan
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Green Mile

I think it was in 1999.

I was really rooting for "The Hurricane" to take home the Oscar for Best Picture. I had read Ruben's book, watched the movie endlessly, and was really hoping they would win the honor. "American Beauty" ended up winning. It wasn't for another few months before I actually watched American Beauty and it was really good. I could see why it won. But when they announced it over The Hurricane, I was disappointed.

I recommend the movie to anyone. It stars Denzel Washington as Ruben "The Hurricane" Carter. He was a professional boxer in the 60's who had done almost 30 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.

The book that Carter wrote while in prison is, "The 16th Round". I recommend that as well.

"The Hurricane" was a good one, thanks for the reminder!

Another to add featuring Denzel Washington is "A Soldier's Story".

Yet another I'd like to add is "The Great Santini" with Robert Duval.

The Shawshank Redemption
Saving Private Ryan
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Green Mile

Those are all very deserving of such an award.
I rather enjoyed all those movies.
