This cannot be good. A full-halo coronal mass ejection just a few hours ago.

That thing is unbelievable. No info on which way that was shot out at though. Hopefully not towards us even though we're still going to feel it even if it was not a direct hit.

This is during a solar minimum to...

Crikey, that was a whopper. I've never seen that kind of footage.

Bravo, submitter.

These things have been getting bigger for a few years now. Some kind of sun cycle. It has nothing to do with global warming though. Thats all my fault because I have a pick-up truck.

I say we declare war on the sun. Its about time its reign of terror comes to an end.

Most impressive, D1k.

I'm in total awe right now.

thisguyrighthere, you're so right. The sun is going down. NOTHING can stand up to mankinds nuclear arsenal.

Seriously, that one hulluva shot. Could you image the chaos that would result if that thing was ejected right at us? No doubt, I wouldn't be using ATS.

this is that culprit for global warming.TPTB aren't telling you that the sun is getting hotter.our sun is dying,if you believe that GW is only happening on earth then think again

Interestingly I'm looking at Space Weather and the only activity reported there (5min data) is a C6 or so flare. Wonder why something so huge isn't showing up?

Then Spaceweather must have just posted this.

ERUPTION! Something exploded on the farside of the sun yesterday, hurling a coronal mass ejection over the sun's eastern limb:

This means a new, active sunspot may be lurking just around the corner. If so, it should appear in a few days when the sun's rotation carries that part of the sun into view from Earth. Stay tuned for updates.

I'm surprised this is on the news. That solar flare is bigger then the sun itself. It looks like the sun freaking exploded.

I'm also surprised there is no information on where this flare was pointed and what i can/will do to the earth. If little flares can disrupt the earth what in the world is this going to do to it?

A new picture from SOHO. Seems the other side is getting very active now. Seems our sun is going a bit crazy.

So what does this mean for us here on earth? We aren't in the debris path are we? We aren't in the field to get hit. So .. Northern Lights? Or something bigger and more sinister???

Yup makeitso... while I was looking at Spaceweather and making the post there was nothing about it. That was added afterwards. Pretty amazing stuff.

oh boy, let's just hope it settles back down as it rotates towards us.

I think this could have had some serious effects on satellites, radio, etc and not to mention geomagnetic activity and such if it was directed towards us.

btw, not sure if it is connected, but I've had intermittent electrical and cable outages today. brief but noticeable non the less.

Does anyone have any information for how this flare compares to other flares?

Climate scientists have long recognized that solar cycles influence global climate. IT does NOT explain the current global warming trend.

ATTENTION GHOST HUNTERS!

Ghost hunters and ghost hunting sites will many times now list Ghost Hunting Weather Reports. It is now thought that solar flares do allow for an increase in paranormal activities (spooky paranormal - not human paranormal).

www.memphisghosthunters.com...

Take a look ... memphis is already coming in with a 'MEGA FLARE' report. Other ghost hunting sites that list ghost weather are following suit.

Shadowlands Ghost Weather station isn't listing it yet.

GHOST HUNTERS .. get your EVPs and IR cameras ready! It's showtime!!

I wonder if we will feel the affects of this and if so when? That did look like a big deal as far as solar flares are concerned.

This definitely does not look good - another similar explosion happened today as well.

Check out the gif below showing yesterday's 'flare' and the one that happened earlier today:

I do not know much about solar flares, but those images/videos show a huge flare. I would like to learn more about them and read what you all at ATS have to say about them.

What I think I do know is that if one was to hit earth dead center or just above the equator we could be set back into the dark ages.

I am hoping someone can answer some questions for me.

    1. What causes them?

    2. How long would it take for this to travel and hit earth?

    3. What could the results be if it hit southern, northern or center.

    4. Is it possible one could hit us without any warning?

    5. What can we as a public do to protect ourselves if we are alerted to one coming our way?

I thank you very much for taking the time to inform us.

Have no fear, the sun is 93 million miles away. The worst effects we may feel are temporary disruptions to the power grid and satellite communications.

1. What causes them?
Not sure check this site
hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov...

2. How long would it take for this to travel and hit earth?
a few minutes, up to an hour or two, I would think depending of the originating location on the sun and the earth's orbit etc...

3. What could the results be if it hit southern, northern or center.
I think the biggest disruption regardless of region would be to satellite and radio communications. Might cause blackouts for various technologies.

4. Is it possible one could hit us without any warning?
I guess it could if no one is paying attention to the sun at a particular moment, but I would think at least a few people would know when one is headed our way, whether the mass media and govt officially informs us...?

5. What can we as a public do to protect ourselves if we are alerted to one coming our way?
be prepared for disruptions in communications that could lead to other infrastructure failure. stay indoors, it believed that radiation from cme's could change cell structure... more cancer etc...

Now there's the theory that solar flares causes increase in earthquake and volcanic activity, also possibily affecting animal life too, so it's possible it also affects humans in ways we have yet to determine other than what is theorized above....
