Misconceptions of 2012

Misconceptions are fairly common on this site, but one that irks me the most is the idea that no prophet had a vision beyond 2012.
I have seen this fallacy repeated in threads beyond number and it is absolutely totally without foundation.

Nostradamus is the name most usually appended to this idea but in fact he predicted that the end of the world would occur in the year 3786 (or 3797, according to some interpretations).
