I concur with Byrd's post, very good information regarding the green flash. It is my understanding the poster of this thread saw it at night. I am aware of the green flash occurence at sunset which info was linked in Byrd's reply. This was a very different occurence which I have witnessed myself on a few occasions. It is my understanding that they are nothing more than the transformers in power facilities discharging an arc or flash of light as they fail/explode.

I could be wrong though, maybe the Green Lantern does exist ?

It could be a flash from a breaker. When they flash its a blueish green color.

If this are the lights in the sky Dark Knight refered to

funny i thought the same thing.
I'v seen 2 ufos since the start of this month.
And they disappeared fast.
And it's funny how the news made a big deal about Ohare.
right as 2007 kicked off, Whether Dark Knight be right or wrongs,
things seem fishy this year

I've seen it before here in Illinois. It was a transformer at a power station exploding due to inclement weather. Seeing as you guys are under a freeze, I wouldn't doubt that it was something similar.

The tranny that blew was about 5 miles away but supposedly you could see it all the way to Chicago (30ish miles). This was back in '96 or '97.

Not saying it's definitely it, but that definitely fits the criteria that you mentioned.

I agree with Fiverz...the transformers have and iron core...when it blows, guess what...GREEN..and a few other lighter colors from various metals inside the transformer...
I have seen this twice..Once in Ft.Worth TX. and again in Chicago (Bolingbrook) IL.
Both times a transformer was the culprit...
Ft. Worth, Lighting strike
chicago...frozen transformer, iced up from a storm and the whole power pole came down...bang went the transformer.

I have never seen a green flash, but the phenomenon sounds fascinating. I just thought I would decorate this particular thread with my avatar. Sorry I don't have more to add.

Hi everyone,

I work in Pico Rivera / Whittier area and for the last 2 weeks we've noticed at-least 5 instances of Bright Green Flashes at night. This usually happens at about 02:30 in the morning. The Bright Green flashes appear to be coming from Whittier Hills, or at times, El Monte, or Rio Hondo. The 1st time I personally saw it, it freaked me out. It was an evolving Bright Green light that comes from the ground and it lights up the sky. I never hear any sounds when it happens. One of my co-workers called me and said, "did you see that light?". I thought I was crazy till he said he saw the same thing and he was about 400 yards away from me. The light flashes lasts about 1/2 a second. I saw 2 green flashes and one bright white flash of light. The 1st time I saw it was 2 weeks ago. The last time I saw it was June 3, 2011 at about 0232 in the morning. I suppose it is a transformer blowing up, but, I've seen this a couple of times in the past. And, usually when it happens you hear a loud electrical zap, a big flash and the a section of town goes black (no power). I hope there is a simple explanation for it. It's just kinda freakin me out since another co-worker told me he's seen it 6 times in the past couple of months. He also never said anything till he heard about others mention it too.

I hope this is not a green hornet stunt... this movie is due to come out in theaters in a couple of weeks. Please comment. thanks
nightman

I just found this thread with google after experiencing something very similar just now. It was incredibly eerie.

I was driving home from San Francisco after a late night at work. I saw a blindingly bright green flash light up the entire sky in front of me, Albany Hill was silhouetted in black. it appeared to be coming from Richmond, CA. The light lasted about a half second, a little longer than lightning. This was at approximately 2 AM. I immediately turned off my stereo, but didn't hear a sound. About ten seconds later it happened again. Still silent, but slightly brighter this time. I'd describe the color as pea soup green. Traffic around me slowed from 70MPH to 45, so I know others saw it too. I got off the freeway continuing home, but didn't see anything further. Tonight is a cool Northern California summer night with a few clouds in the sky.

I tweeted about it (@callipygian), and searched for others but didn't find anything.

My experience seems similar to others in this thread, but none of the explanations appear to fit. I'm incredibly curious what happened, and a little freaked out.

Wow its 2018 and here I am commenting on something that hasn't been updated since 2011. Well anyways I recently experienced the same exact thing as Callipygian except with one added side effect. It was between 2 am and 2:30 am and the sky flashed pea soup green twice about 60 seconds apart and both times the light flashed the fan in my room slowed significantly, but never stopped. We have been experiencing some weather where I live but I drove around earlier today and didn't notice any wreckage from recently exploded transformer... also it seems unlikely that 2 would blow up about a minute apart...

I would also like to add my experience that occurred on Labor Day weekend in 2012 around 3am. Three of us were outside on a friends deck overlooking the lake about 30 miles north of Dayton, TN. You could see the first set of rolling hills (or mountains if you’re from here) beyond the lake with another set even further behind them. Inbetween the two sets a very vivid, almost neon green light erupted from the ground in a vibrating, expanding manner. As the light reached its apex it immediately subsided. They whole event couldn’t have lasted more than a second.

Being several miles away I can safely say that it was an enormous event, whatever caused it was massive. Some people tried to write it off as a transformer blowing up, but I’ve seen that and this would have had to been a transformer the size of a several square blocks all going at the same time, and even then the neon green can’t be explained that way. There are no transformers that size in the area, and further more there were no reports of anything like that happening the following day.

While this was not an object in the sky, part of me feels like it was something powering up, maybe for a take off of some sort.

I can also confirm a couple of times in the past year I’ve looked out whenever the Chinooks pass by, which is probably a handful of times a year, and have seen bright green flashes in the sky nowhere near the helicopters, but occured within minutes of them arriving, passing or departing.

It was a mild night around October last year the last time I saw them. There were lights hovering near our town that I put down air traffic as they were on the flight path, then with the Chinooks coming in from the west and the lights in the north, there were 2 to 3 green flashes perhaps minutes apart, from high-up within the few light clouds immediately to the east over the town. No sounds, no cracks or fizzles, no bad weather and no transformers near here that would blow for any reason. The light intensity was the same as a lightning strike would create but was more localised within the sky and unmistakably green.

I checked Twitter and another guy remarked on the same weirdness. I checked further back and the same thing had happened a year before, with the Chinooks in the area. This time I saw the lights it seemed they hung around circling the town for around 10 minutes when they usually pass through.
