I worked as an SRO for a month. The kids at Magnet Schools are taking college level classes, do you think the not-so-smart kids want to be taking college classes?

North Carolina is one of the four states that does not have a statewide law regarding communications devices in schools yet. The State Board of Education is trying to pass one that would make it a $20 fine and confiscation.

even though this is my last year in highschool i really hope that doesnt pass because it is just carrying the image that you cant trust your children or students to be responsible and that punishment is the only way to get things done.

They had a huge problem with cellphones over there, Middle schoolers were walking around school texting and talking on them even. They banned cellphones in the schools and a lot of the problems dissappeared.

i dont think its that bad here. but now that i think about it if it did i could see that working here. but i would much rather get cell phones banned at school then have cell phone blockers be put up in the school. there are times when you really need a cell phone

I was talking to a cousin of mine who is a SRO in Richmond, VA, he works at in a middle school there. According to him over half of the middle schoolers have cellphones. He says that it is constantly causing problems, he has to confiscate about 20 a week because they disturb class, he said the high schools up there were worse because about 80% of the kids had cellphones.

The issue will not be addressed by fines and confiscation. This is an institute of education. Why can’t responsibility be taught here instead of hiding behind a punishment? Banning cell phones or any other object or substance does not send the right message. Proper education does. If a teacher can’t handle that along with the support of their administrators then maybe they need a different career.

Cell phones get confiscated when they are used during class (or the teacher orders the person with the cellphone to put it away).

Though it doesn't give any major problems here (The Netherlands), at least not at my school.

Actually it's quite fun because some teachers go browse the internet on some kids phone and get them big bills

thats the point i have been trying to make this whole time. that we should try to teach responsibility instead of automaticly going to punishment

There it is... I've been waiting for someone to say this...

Yes.. You are there to learn... to pay attention and listen to what is being taught in the classroom. You are not there to talk or text on the phone or to play games on the phone. You are not there to listen to music during class.

What do you think a school would be without disciplin?

Do you know what disciplin means?

discipline1 [ˈdisiplin] noun

training in an orderly way of life

Example: All children need discipline.

I think more schools should be like boot camps. We might actually see better test results and more kids going to college and earning degrees.

Hence the need for AP and regular classes.

AP classes help develop your learning skills when you proceed to college.

Anyways on topic, I would warn the student to put away his/her phone. Next time I will take it up and tell that person he/she would get it back after the end of the class period. Problem solved. Put in detentions if you want to. Its based on your own way to manage a class. You could be a drill sergeant or a consultant.
