I can't really make a list of who the best is, different guitarists excel in different aspects of playing. So I'm going to cheat a bit and just list my personal favourite guitar players, in no particular order.

Angus Young
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Eddie Van Halen
Pete Townshend
Kim Mitchell

Many more, but those are the few that come to mind right now while I'm half asleep.

This is too hard to make a list of. When is a guitarist extremely good?

Joe satriani is very good ofcourse but what about the metal guitarists? Song writing then? Joe satriani's songs altrough with very good guitar are not as innovative as say Opeth's songs. Is he therefor worse? Either way i cant possibily make a list.

Steve Vai. Hands down. No contest. Game over.

I mean Jeez, Frank Zappa hired him to do "Impossible Guitar Parts" on tour, LIVE at 17 years old!

Spank it Stevie!

A guitarist that sells, no need for bass, drums, he's just the damn best?

Stevie Ray, #1, always and forever.

Tony Iomie, where was the rhythm guitar to pick up when he went wild?

Brian May, if you don't know his work, you're in a cave. It's singular.

Vai cooked, flash, nothing more. Malmsteen, good, see Vai. Eddie, they didn't call him "Fast Eddie" for nothing. Fast doesn't make GOD'S.
