Hey Genya,

SETI@Home and BOINC crunch the same sets of data, right? Just different programs for processing the same info?

Hi DC!!

I don't *think* so, but I'm not au fait with BOINC as such Ike.

The transition to BOINC promised to run "new" data derived from SETI Southern Hemisphere and AstroPulse ie from here BUT whether BOINC is using this data during it's Beta/ Alpha testing stage or not, I really don't know - sorry

xn is "the man" for BOINC and must read every update published, so perhaps he can throw some light on the data that is used at present?

I'm looking forward (honestly!!) to using BOINC when it is released "officially", as the prospect of crunching data received from the Parkes radio telescope is enthralling - it is fully steerable and access the Southern hemisphere (where our Galatic Centre lies) which, of course, Arecibo could never do. So, whilst the prospect of finding ET probably isn't much greater, the fact of being able to crunch "new" data is enticing!!

Sorry my answer isn't definitive DC - one lacks information!!

Genya... I thought I'd fill you in that I now have 143 WU's. Some of these are completing in under 10 minutes!

Thought I'd fill you in... seeing last time I had an error completing one!

Not that I want to steal thunder from Genya's next archive post update, but I just checked the SETI@Work teams comparison page for the first time in quite a while and saw the HUGE jump in position we have made. Last I knew we were in 882th place and now we are in 853rd place with a chance to be in 845th by the end of the week!

Team ATS returns almost 300 work units a day!

You'll see my account moving up a bit again. My wife wanted to run SETI on her PC again. How could I refuse?

Hi Shugo!!

Well, 10 minutes seems *very* fast, so I suspect that these WU's are "bonus2 ones, in as much as they contain some error (like earthborne interference) which SETI@home "rejects" (though the "bonus" is that you get the "credit" for "crunching" them (even erroroneous data needs checking by someone!!
)

Do you have SETI Monitor Shugo (I can't remember - sorry
) If so, have a look at your archived WU's and see how many are in this "sub-60 minute band" - it might prove interesting??

Anyway, keep up the good crunching buddy!!

Hi Spectre!!

No worries about "stealing my thunder"!! Thanx for the "place" update: when I looked earlier (for the Archive post here) SETI@work hadn't updated from the previous submission (I think!) so I didn't catalogue it!!

As for your dear wife - she has impeccable taste Sir!!

And DirtyDevil (where he go?) is *fast* catching me up - relegation approaches me Spectre!!
(Mind, closing slowly on Sinchron (where *he* go too?), so all is not lost!!

The SETI@Work Team stats have been updated. Be sure to check out our progress. It is pretty impressive. I am going to move a couple of my machines from BOINC back to the original SETI to help improve our position even more.

Hi all!

First, very many congratulations to DirtyDevil for securing 4th place and threatening (as it were!) to move up the board with very impressive ease!! (at around 47WU's per day!!)

Things fairly quiet here, as May holiday was spent away from home at my partners brother and his family. Relaxing and made a nice change!

Anyway, now back in harness and ready to update our stats.

SETI@Work

87 active members: 206 inactive members, 234.3WU's average per day, 108 566WU's total at Tue May 4 19:10:32 2004 UTC.

Position 856th in all teams!

ATS SETI@home team stats

293 members, 108 560WU's in 122.349 CPU years at Tue May 4 18:03:03 2004 UTC

ATS BOINC Beta team

Members 34 (22 active members), Total credit 20 077.25, Recent average credit 262.29

Position 29th out of 966 teams!

Well done all BOINC/ SETI@home "number crunchers" - a fantastic effort, as Spectre notes above!!

Very interesting thread earlier today (when pantha pointed it out to me!!) here where it seemed as if we might have found a strong signal from space (which might yet be the case, of course!).

Worth having a look if you haven't already seen it, IMO, though it is true to say that it seems too good (ie loud!) to be the signal we've been waiting for... Time will tell I'm sure!!

It is the little things that make life sweet, like our team passing my brother's. They are the "Alpha Phi Omega SETI@HOME Service Project"--see ya' suckers! Actually, they are quite nice guys and deserve to be beaten only by a team as cool as ours.

Way to go!! A quick search here - well, they have some "big hitters" in there Spectre -

1) Pod 15 882
2) RichIn109 14 825
3) Lawrence Solomon 10 964
) Third Degree Byrne 7 880
5) Reuben Alexander 7 130
6) David Gates 6 912

To name a few!!

Any of them want to "jump ship" and join ATS, perchance?!!

These frat-types are pretty dedicated and loyal, so I doubt I could persuade any to join us. I HAVE been actively recruiting people I know who participate in SETI@Home, but don't belong to a team and other teams with fewer members and lower total workunits. ATS is something that I know a lot of my pals would enjoy, regardless.

I'll be persistant in trying to get our numbers up, one way or another. My suggestion would be to ask around and see who else our current members could get to join the ATS team.

Hi Spectre!!

Fair comment - what about starting a thread that seeks to do this??

It might be interesting in our "closing" SETI@home days!! I'll actively promote in my "other", academic conference too...

Let's get "cracking" people!!

I wasn't sure which would be the appropriate thread for this but just to make people aware of a notice posted on the SETI site

as follows

OUTAGE NOTICE: On Monday, May 17th we are going to have a two-hour web site outage starting at 17:00 UTC. Client downloads, statistical pages, etc. will be off-line during this time.

Thanx for the update, pantha - no worries about which thread to use - I'm sure this will be an archive post of interest in the future!!

Well, the teams are doing very well - I'll be back later with an update of course but I'm "catching up" at present following an "absence" of 24 or more hours due to work-related issues (namely a conference I attended which entailed an early start and late finish yesterday. I really had no desire to sit at a computer following the 15 hour day!!
)

Hi all!

Well, *tremendous* news for ATS SETI@home team, as our new members (brought in by Spectres appeal) has added very many WU's to the teams total!!

SETI@work

86 active members: 213 inactive members, 86 : 230.9 WU's average per day, Total = 120 971 WU's at Fri May 14 16:55:04 2004 UTC

Global postion is shown as 842 BUT please note that this reflects a figure of *only* (!!) 110 380WU's, as the board hasn't been updated to allow for the new members joining (especially UT Libraries Access & Delivery Services, with the enormous contribution of 8 823 WU's!!

ATS SETI@home stats

299 members, 120 973WU's in 145.286 CPU years at Fri May 14 16:56:22 2004 UTC

ATS BOINC team

Members 37 (23 active), Total credit 22 574.27, Recent average credit 262.01

Position 44th out of 1005 teams!!

Excellent work everybody - we are getting back to where we were before Publius joined us - where did he go??

Keep up the GREAT work please!!

Hi Darkblade!!

Welcome to the team!!

Well, the first thing to do is to look at the Index , just to get a "feel" for the project and "our" ATS experiences.

Then, DJDOHBOY did a wonderful Tutorial which might prove beneficial too?

As regards joining the team, there have been difficulties recently (possibly due to SETI@home gradually moving to BOINC??) though Spectre discovered a "work around" which you can find here

I hope that helps DB?? Please keep us "posted" as to your success (or otherwise!!) Good luck!!

Thanks, I will deffinetly look into it
When I was doing seti@home before I got up to around 131 files before I stopped cause my comp was needed for some other heavy programs. Will check it out again
