PTWC geophysicist Gerard Fryer said if a tsunami did occur it would threaten an area only about 100 kilometres from the epicentre and would likely measure less than one-metre high.

A friend pointed out to me there was a 7.2 in the Mariana Islands that struck a bit after the 5.6 here in the Bay area.

There was some mention of ghost quakes, quakes that were detected by the monitors here but it was from the Mariana Islands on September 28, 2007. It's in the first video at this link: KRON 4 - OOPS

Could there be some relation?

There's just been a 6.5 quake to the south of Australia, near a small island, called Macquarie Island, seems like it just missed that island and hit the fault in the ocean. Here's the map link:

There's been a handful of quakes today... this one just happened in Indonesia, about 125 miles close to an island, hoping everyone is okay. It's a 5.7.... also, there's been about 4 or 5 over 5.0 today -- the minimum the gov't site registers.

Here is the earthquake report - like apex wrote it. Since when are 6.0 "moderate" quakes? I guess, next year, 8.0 will be "minor" quakes...just like our good apex would describe them.

Moderate quake strikes Indonesia's Sumatra

JAKARTA (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's Sumatra island on Sunday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, the meteorology agency said.

The epicenter of the quake lay 129 km southwest of Bengkulu at a depth of 10 km. There was no tsunami warning. The tremors were followed by a 5.7 Richter aftershock.

Bengkulu was hit by a powerful quake of magnitude 8.4 in September that killed at least 25 people and toppled thousands of homes. It has been jolted by frequent tremors since then.

Indonesia suffers frequent earthquakes as it is on an area of intense seismic activity in the "Pacific Ring of Fire."

Update: 11/11/07

Japanese quake about 130 miles from the nearest island (Ryukyu) and over 600 miles from Tokyo. About 5.1 on the R scale, anyone there on Ats, feel that?

Also, about an hour prior, there was a 5.2, south of the Fiji islands, missing by 45 miles on one island.

These Mariana Islands have been getting hit lately. Just misses for the last day, around 5.0 on the R scale under 50 miles from the islands.

That edge of the Pacific plate seems really active.... I wonder when the San Andreas is going to get nailed? Surprised I have heard more from this thread about it being 150 years overdue...
