Finally, the Chinese administration have officially launched the previously "top-secret
" J-10. Perhaps the worst kept aviation secret is now formally out.

Here is the formal announcement :

China's Air Force equipped with domestic-made new-generation fighter

Sources with the Air Force of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) said Friday that it has been equipped with China-made new-generation fighter aircraft, the Jian-10, or Fighter-10.

An Air Force officer told Xinhua the force's "overall battle effectiveness has been noticeably enhanced" after being equipped with the aircraft and through intensive drills and training.

He disclosed that Jian-10 was capable of launching "precision attacks while hedgehopping and making long-distance assaults at altitude above 10,000 meters".

english.people.com.cn...

And a bunch of cool pictures to go with this aswell ..

Here's the full video report .... www.youtube.com... (shows the J-10 firing missiles, dropping bombs and refueling in-flight, etc).

Cheers.

Sounds like a great aircraft.

How does it stack up against the other fighters of the world?

Waynos.

Well to be honest, nobody knows so we can only speculate (and believe me, that's something people here love to do). We should not, I repeat not start discussing it again. If we do we will just end up with 20 pages of useless crap proving nothing. At the end of the day you can always reply to a post with "nobody knows since it hasn't gone head to head with the USA fighters"

However if you demand some sort of line-up. The J-10 is said to be equal with the American F-16. And that the F-22 would well destroy it in any sort of combat. That's the explanation I would expect you to read at the end of the 20 page if we let westpoint and stealth spy go head to head.

Wayons thank you for that, lets not start that up again. I suggest the Search Feature to all that are interested...

Thanks for the report Stealth Spy, great video.

Also, why do the Chinese J-10's have a forward radar boom? A feature found on western test aircraft but not on operational ones.

EDIT: F-16's also have a boom, NVM.

Please read this sticky about comparing fighters (which can be found among other important threads at the top of the first page in the Aircraft Projects forum).

Good footage. It hit me like a wet sack of doorknobs to see so many J-10s lined up when the Chinese have been keeping this so secret (or at least when I have only seen pictures of 1 at a time). Very nice aircraft, I think it's just a tad behind the EF-2000 Typhoon because the Eurofighter has 2 engines. Other than that I expect great things. Does anyone know off hand if it's got thrust vectoring?

Oh well, now I have to go find out stuff on the J-12. Wikipedia, awaaaaaaaaay!

What a rotten thread it is!
If the internet works and not intercepted by earthquick again, new gen. fighter will be declassified here next year, all you need just is more patience.

J-10, declassified at last, is said to be comparable to modern western mainstream fighters (excluding F22)

Something useless just occurred to me: It looks rather like it's half F-16 and half EF-2000 Typhoon. Is anyone else seeing that influence or am I just insane?

Why does it look like the J-10's are lined up on the runway?

At first I thought it was the ramp with the dotted yellow line, but doesn't look like that because of all the tire marks and I can see the threshold all the way at the end.

Is this the way they set aircraft up on chinese airforce bases?

I'm not familiar with how they do things over there.

Shattered OUT...

Would it be correct to assume that the J10 is put together in a less sophisticated way then other aircraft of its "generation" as I can clearly see large numbers of rivets in the construction.

The Typhoon is laser welded so has a smooth surface without rivets, as an example.

Regards

Thats a nice jet. Nice to see they finally made it official although it was well know beforehand. Can't wait to see what it is like in performance in comparison to the F-22 or Eurofighter.

www.afa.org...

DOD seemed to offer a re-assessment of the capabilities of China’s F-10 fighter, which it previously had compared to the F-16 Block 30. (See “Washington Watch: Chinese Military Is Catching Up—Fast,” September 2005, p. 12.) In this latest version of the annual China report, the Pentagon said the F-10 is probably more comparable to the Eurofighter Typhoon and French Rafale, considered among the top three fighters in the world today, after the US F-22A. The Pentagon expects more than 1,200 F-10s will be built, and improved versions—the F-10A and “Super-10”—are in advanced development.

I'm going to say that's more "fluff" than reality, intended to hype up the J-10 to the Euro consortium and perhaps free up some more funds for USAF projects, such as the F-22.

Look at J10's air intake and compare it to F16 or Lavi's simple air intake, it is designed for consideration of supersonic performence. J10 is excellent in both low speed and high altitude/high speed. Its max Mach is as high as M2.35, service ceiling is >20000m. I think J10=F16+F15. You know the supersonic performence is very important in BVR age. The J10 may be comparable to EF and Rafale. It is said the half-stealth version of J10 is on going. It may be better than current EF and Rafale ,and close to F35.

What's so simple about the air intake on the F-16, not like it matters but the F-16 can also reach Mach 2.

Perhaps, though I doubt it's top speed is much past Mach 2, let us not even discuss combat speed (external weapons load). And do you have any evidence to suggest that the J-10 has a service ceiling of more than 65,000 ft? Meaning it can sustain level flight at those altitudes.

Umm... to simply and kindly put it, no.
