In an effort to promote a peace effort in the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, US had asked Israel to stop construction on Palestinian lands, but last Tuesday this promise was broken when Israel had approved an order to continue building over the Palestinian lands. Israel will continue construction in the West Bank town of Maskiot, by approval by the Defense Ministry, despite criticisms. The construction will house 100 returning Israeli families who left the West Bank, when Israel withdrew their check points from the area.

JERUSALEM -Israel has approved a new settlement in the
West Bank to house former Jewish settlers from the
Gaza Strip, officials said Tuesday, breaking a promise to the U.S. to halt home construction in the Palestinian territories.

Construction in the northern West Bank town of Maskiot began months ago, but the project only received final approval from the Defense Ministry last week, said Dubi Tal, head of the Jordan Valley regional council.

Saeb Erekat, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, condemned the construction and urged the government to revoke its authorization, saying it violated the spirit of cooperation inaugurated by a meeting Saturday between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

It really doesn't surprise me when Israel does something like this. Once again, they continue to remain stubborn when outside interests try to help with the situation, and protect only their own interests. Can they honestly expect this to further help the peace process? This will likely cause a greater amount of instability in the region, causing Israel to send more troops further into Palestine, resulting in more checkpoints and more settlements.

This has been going on for years. There was a recent news release about illegal settlements and how they are constantly stealing palestinian lands. Then they cry crocodile tears to the world that the palestinians are attacking them for no reason whatsoever.
The US government is well aware of these breaches of trust. They just overlook it.

Why the US doesn't teach a lesson to Israël and bomb them or cut their funds and impose a economical blockade on them? That would teach them! But the president is a zionist, unless a third party who is for equality in this part of the world, they will never back down unless they are crushed or don't have money.

I support Israel, but I don't support them expanding settlements on Palestinian lands.

If they continue to do this the U.S. should pull all international aid to Israel.

Let me throw a highly controversially question into the foray.

WWJD?

Would he support his people over what is morally right?

OMG!

Israel broke a promise and is backstabbing it's friends?

I would never have suspected this in a million years.

May a dozen Qassams rain down on their business ventures....

a one-liner maybe, but what sanctions can compare to our Palestinian neighbours being bombed and shot for no reason but to exist

Well, Israel forces out families they once encouraged to move there.. all for the sake of peace. That lasted, what a year if that and then the Palestinians, in all their ignorance, decided to start a war with Israel. It would appear the deals off, the children couldn't play nice, let Israel re-develop the land and allow it to come to some use.

Israel broke the ceasefire with Hamas. Remember the beach and the family?

How quickly we forget, hey?

200 Trailers since June of this year!! They said it was only 30 but news is being broke that its actually 200 were being placed illegally while the war in Lebanon was beginning. (Obviously they took advantage of the fact that eyes were averted North)

Settlers are continuing to place mobile homes and trailers in West Bank outposts and settlements, without legal permits. Civil Administration reports show that since the start of the second Lebanon war in July, some 200 mobile homes have been placed. This is a substantial increase over the few dozen trailers placed in the first half of the year.

Despite declarations by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz, there has been no progress toward dismantling outposts.

Since the beginning of the month, nearly 90 trailers were placed illegally in the West Bank. A Defense Ministry aerial survey found new mobile homes in illegal outposts such as Givat Assaf, near Beit El, and Amona, near Ofra. Some of the new mobile homes were also placed in veteran settlements.

They definitely should be reprimanded for this. They seriously need to just dump radioactive waste on the crappy land. That will solve the problem.

Ermmm bombing Israel? economical blockade? to "teach them?" you do know that the majority of Israelis do not support this action and i don't think "bombing them" is going to solve the problem, do you?

they will never back down unless they are crushed or don't have money.

What a lovely statement!

But the president is a zionist

and also, i like to point out, not everyone who supports Israel is a Zionist

I'm afraid you all have been seeing this from the wrong perspective. I'm an Israeli who moved here from the US. I know what each side hears, I watch both American and Israeli news. It seems that you all believe in the "peace process" and the road map. The fact of the matter is that only westerners believe in it because they don't realize that he so-called Palestinians want Israel gone, they don't care about negotiations, they kidnap our soldiers and they expect us to give up 1,400 of the most dangerous terrorists that we have in custody. Why? Could this be a part of a plot to take over Israel with terror??? I think so. The Palestinians are only there because we allowed them to be there. They are creating their army on our land and trying to take us out from inside our borders. Tell me, all you brainiacs, what would America do if Mexicans or Canadans came in to the US and started to make bombs and blow up buses and buildings, go into banks and suicide bomb themselves.

We will not have someone tell us how to defend ourselves because noone and DEFINATELY not the US knows what kind of situation we are facing. We are being threatened with total annihilation. Name for me some others (except for the Jews in 1939) who's existence on this earth was threatened in such a way.

The ceasefire only exists on one side. The bombs will never stop falling in Sderot near the Gaza Strip, and we will NOT sit back as the Holocaust pays a revisit.

Thank you and I hope you all will educate yourselves a little more and see things from a more worldly perspective (I'm not saying Israeli, I'm saying WORLDLY).

James

P.S. The family that was attacked on the beach was making bombs.

Bulky,
Actually some of us are aware that Hamas seeks the destruction of Israel. Fatah is the more moderate party. Some of us are aware that historically Israel has traded dangerous prisoners for captured solders. I hope that will not repeat itself. And Bulky, some of us are aware that they was Israel is treating the Palestinians in the occupied territories is down right despicable.

The So-called Palestinians? From one "brainiac" to another , you just moved there from America and you are saying you are entitled to that land more then someone who has been living there for about a thousand years? LOL Thats a hoot. Your an american living on someone elses land and you are going to tell them where they should live and how they should live as well? Is it a wonder why they attack you?

They are creating their army on our land and trying to take us out from inside our borders. Tell me, all you brainiacs, what would America do if Mexicans or Canadans came in to the US and started to make bombs and blow up buses and buildings, go into banks and suicide bomb themselves.

Instead of using non-existant examples
Why not just say this:
If a bunch of European, American, Russians or Australians came to your country and began throwing you out, buying your land up with questionable clauses, running people out of their villages, taking over your banks, homes, farms, businesses and then built apartheid walls and roads on top of all that, what would you do, now that would be a better example.

We will not have someone tell us how to defend ourselves because noone and DEFINATELY not the US knows what kind of situation we are facing. We are being threatened with total annihilation.

Oh but by being part of the UN you have no choice but to have other people tell you what you should do. Your idea of defense is questionable.

Gracious, here we go with the "annihilation" routine. Enough already its so ridiculous that after all the Palestinian deaths you can even have the nerve to even say these words.

The ceasefire only exists on one side. The bombs will never stop falling in Sderot near the Gaza Strip, and we will NOT sit back as the Holocaust pays a revisit.

Yes one side and unfortunately Palestine is 1 place not 2. Israel has split the place up but it is still one country. The ceasefire should apply in both but conveniently your ceasefire on one side is good while IDF kill people on the West Bank side. Its kinda like a switch pitcher giving his arm a rest. Kill some this side then go kill some on the other side a few weeks later.

P.S. The family that was attacked on the beach was making bombs.

Yeah sure. A Bomb making family. Riiiight.

Hey you are gonna fit in over there just fine I can tell. You must have practiced your BS skills before you left.

Glad you made Aliyah. Hopefully you signed up for the IDF as it seems your pretty stoked up, maybe while you are there you can get in some confirmed kills of your own.

Can you support this claim with evidence? To my knowledge, the Israeli government reported that the death of the family was a mistake, in one report, and in the other, it was a Hammas rocket that killed them.

You will have to explain to me why a family would also be making bombs on a beach with their daughter at a picnic. If the family were making bombs on the beach, then wouldn't Israel have bombed them intentionally and claimed they were terrorists, rather than blaming it on someone else, and then claiming it was an accident?

Strategically thinking I believe it is in the western worlds interest to keep a strong Israel. As long as the arab world is preoccupied with the Israeli problem they can't walk on the walls of Vienna. Ha ha. Everybody thinks the Jews are playing the west. I think we are playing the Jews against the Arabs.

Absolutely not. The Evangelicals of the USA would never permit that to happen, and neither would the Jewish people in America. Neither one would place them in a position to endanger them. Israel is not Allied to the USA , The USA is allied to Israel.

Bush is claiming he is protecting American interests in the Middle East, while during the Israel-Lebanon war thousands of Lebanese Americans waited days to be removed from Lebanon and many Lebanese Americans have Businesses, investments and vacation homes there, Bushie and Dr. Rice told the world "Not Yet" on a cease fire. If his statement in his speech the other night were true about protecting American interests in Lebanon. people would not have had to wait, businesses would not have been damaged, homes destroyed and the economy in Lebanon damaged.
