The first step in becoming a moderator is to not ask to become one

Anyway, it's by invitation as positions become open.

okay time to protest. time to protest about the LACK OF INFORMATION given about becoming a moderator.

members of ats are no different from members of the public. and im sure we dont like when information is hidden from us.

how is a new member supposed to know it only hapens with invitation if nobody tells him?????

Incorrect. Members of ATS are guests of the owners. This is not a democracy, it's a benevolent dictatorship.

In order to keep sanity within the community certain laws such as the T&C's are enforced by the benevolent dictatorship. All we ask is that the members be civil towards one another.

There are many threads on ATS about becoming a moderator and in each of them the law of not asking to become a mod has been discussed.

You should have done your homework.

Mods are picked when ther are seen to be fair, non-bias, tolerant, able to take flak and not ban as revenge, upto date on current threads, and most importantly...online for about 4 days a week.

That would be my best bet anyway. Otherwise there would be alot of abuse and deadbeats.

Oh noes!

This is not a democracy, and never proclaimed to be a democracy. This is a privately owned discussion board, and the owners set the rules. Your existence here, and mine, is conditional.

Threatening to post a thread about this being a benevolent dictatorship...

Too funny...

i see how this works. you cant be a moderator unless that moderator likes you or knows you. okay thats all i needed to know.

No, moderators don't pick new moderators - the owners (Simon, Skeptic, Springer) pick moderators

And it has very little to do with who likes who - it's about decorum, restraint, helpfullness, integrity, dedication, and some etc., thrown in for good measure.

A good start would be to be a good member - the rest follows naturally.

If I were you, I would just worry about being a good member; post quality material and treat your fellows with respect.

Here's how it works.

You'll be walking down the street. It may be a day very similar to today, a car slows down as it approaches you. Behind the wheel is someone you know, perhaps even a friend. They'll offer to give you a ride...do not get into that car.

If you do, it's off to mod camp or maybe it's tennis camp I can't remember which one.

Spiderj

Could have been space camp.

Mods are chosen by the senior staff and owners of the site. What formula they use or dice they roll is not privvy to me.

ATS is not about being a mod, it's about being a part of a community that cares for one another, and wants to learn and understand the truth. (Wherever that may lead us.)

Thats all I have to offer on the subject.

The truth is, you really don't know who controls this board....

Just because they appear harmless, doesn't mean they don't have some Hidden Purpose which we are all unwittingly part of.

SO himself said in a post the other day that the owners of this site are making a profit and are hoping to make it their main source of income. That is not a hidden agenda.

It is not wrong to create something beautiful and get rewarded for it.

What is wrong is to receive something beautiful and spit on it because it was given to you for free.

There is an old saying, "Do not look a gift horse in the mouth."

I'm not seeing the point of this so I'm going to give a clear and concise answer and then we're all going to move on to real conversations.

This website has 3 owners. Simon, SO, and Springer. ATS is a community enjoyed by thousands of members (free of charge) and has an astounding volume of posts contributed every day.

Obviously that is too much for 3 people to handle, so the Owners of ATS choose people to invite as moderators who will assist in keeping the community running. Helping new members, keeping things in order and numerous other tasks are involved.

Who gets to become a moderator? The Owners decide that. They decide based on members who are shown to be serious contributors to this community, who are shown to have the community's best interests in mind, and who are known to have certain traits like patience, and strengths like outreach. That's all there is to it.

I resent the implied accusations made here that it's more important that the admins like you. You are incorrect. It's more important that the person have what it takes. Our administrators see that in members and make their decisions.

I also resent your "threat". You're going to make a thread about ATS being a privately owned website rather than a free democracy? Well, here... save yourself the trouble and take it from a member of the senior staff. ATS is a privately owned community. Ok?

It's one thing to have questions but your attitude is really out of line.

I am going to throw my measly and very worthless two cents of thought into the mix here.

An administrators position here on ATS is like being a dispatcher for a railroad. You throw the wrong switch and the whole duggum thing becomes a mess. If it wasn't for the moderators and the superb job that they do and the things they have to endure, I really don't want to think of what this site would be like without them.

Big
to the Mods and the Los Tres Amigos de ATS!!!
