USB Ports

I recently bought and MP3 player (a Lyra from RCA to be exact). Well, I connected the USB cable into the player and connected the other end into my computer's USB port and....nothing happened. Nothing comes up indicating that I inserted something into the computer, nothing is displayed under "My Computer." What is wrong here?

As a side note, I have Windows XP if that matters.
