Tottenham: Spurs can go after Finnan

Teenage full-back Phil Ifil's flirtation with Tottenham's first team could be brief after Liverpool reportedly told the White Hart Lane club they an open transfer negotiations with Republic of Ireland international Steve Finnan.

Ifil, 17, was praised by his team-mates after an impressive Premiership debut against Liverpool, filling the gap left by Stephen Carr's £2million move to Newcastle.

But with another Irish right-back Stephen Kelly still recovering from ankle trouble at Spurs, head coach Jacques Santini wants more experience in defence and former Fulham player Finnan fits the bill.
