Manchester United: Fergie laments - injury ravaged start

Sir Alex Ferguson surveyed his injury-ravaged squad and admitted it was the "worst start" Manchester United had ever experienced as he prepared for Wednesday's crucial Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Bucharest.

The 3-1 defeat by Arsenal in Sunday's FA Community Shield was far from easy to take for the Scot, whose side levelled through a fine second-half strike from summer signing Alan Smith but were eventually undone by a smart finish from Jose Reyes before Mikael Silvestre put through his own net.

Yet with so many of his first-choice players out through injury or suspension as he prepares for a two-legged tie which his club cannot afford to lose, Ferguson could have been forgiven to have his mind elsewhere after it was clear events were not going United's way at the Millennium Stadium.

As well as missing Wes Brown (Achilles) and Louis Saha, who picked up a medial knee ligament problem against PSV Eindhoven, for "two to three weeks", Gabriel Heinze and Cristiano Ronaldo are away on Olympic duty, while Ruud van Nistelrooy, Kleberson, Liam Miller and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are all out injured.
