Liverpool are reportedly tracking former Arsenal striker Sylvain Wiltord after selling Michael Owen to Real Madrid.

French striker Wiltord is currently in France training with Rennes' youth set-up, but could be on the verge of a return to The Premiership.

The France international striker was released from Highbury this summer, but has already received an offer of a return to England.

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is interested but Wiltord is keen to see if Liverpool step up their interest.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez needs extra cover in the striking department after Owen's departure, and was keen on signing Wiltord when he was still in charge of Valencia.

Wiltord would prefer a switch to Anfield and the prospect of UEFA Champions League football, but it remains to be seen if Benitez will opt for a move.

Liverpool star Djibril Cisse has revealed his anguish over the fact that Sylvain Wiltord did not land a move to Anfield over the summer.

Wiltord was strongly linked with a move to Merseyside, following his release from Arsenal at the end of last season.

I was surprised they was even thinking of signing him. He is not a prolific goalscorer and he couldn't hold down a regular spot at the gooners.

There's an excess of talent over at Arsenal and a spot doesn't come easy. Wiltord would make a great addition to the merseysiders, should the transfer fall through.

Yeah i guess so but it's goals that count and he just doesn't score enough. Maybe in a different side he might improve who knows...

Chelsea isn't scoring any, as can be seen by their goaless draws, and there were a lot of them last season under Ranieri.

It only takes one goal to put a team away.

Thats right it only takes one goal to win. Didn't Arsenal do that when they won the title awhile ago and everyone in the crowd called them boring, boring Arsenal as they kept winning 1-0...

wiltord admits he left arsenal on good terms

Sylvain Wiltord insists he left Arsenal on good terms with manager Arsene Wenger despite a topsy-turvy relationship with the Gunners chief.

The France international ended his four-year stay with the Premiership champions in the summer after allowing his contract to expire.

Didn't he go to Lyon?

Well they are 3rd in the league so far, 1 point behind the leaders.
