Simple, Steve Vai!!! Listen to "For the Love of God", recorded on the G3 live CD!! Besides, he's the only one who sold his soul to the devil, at the crossroads!!! ;-) So I guess I need to mention Ralph Macchio as well. But Steve Vai, is definately the second best.

Tom Sawyer

Though my personal favorite is Kirk Hammett.

The rifts he plays are amazing. And he was a student of one of the best, Joe Satriani.

99% of metallica's greatest riff's were written by dave mustaine, while he was on metallica, not kirk.

Cant believe no-one has mentioned Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits and Solo) among all these greats, he's a MASSIVELY underrated guitarist, ok, maybe he's not the greatest ever, but for me, he's right up there with the best of them, I saw him live a few years ago at a small gig (about 200 people) and what he can do with a guitar is truly staggering!
