Everton failed to land highly-rated Norwegian international Brede Hangeland on the eve of the transfer deadline.
It has emerged that Viking rejected Everton's substantial bid because the Merseyside club wanted to take the player on a brief trial.
Hangeland has suffered a few injuries recently and The Toffees wanted to check on his fitness.
However, Viking were not keen and so decided that the player would remain with them.
The 23-year-old, who can play in midfield or defence, is the Norwegian club's prized asset and has been watched by the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and
Wolves over recent months.
