Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has revealed he put together a bid to buy Chelsea at the same time Roman Abramovich was preparing his Stamford Bridge takeover.

Abramovich caused shockwaves in English football with his purchase of The Blues in the summer of 2003 and subsequent mammoth spending spree.

His huge investment in the club reaped a dividend on Saturday when Chelsea were crowned champions for the first time in 50 years.
