Arsene Wenger was predictably upset with the performance of referee Mike Riley after his side surrendered their unbeaten run at Old Trafford. The
Frenchman thought the match official had blundered in awarding United their penalty, and insisted he was delighted with his side's display.
"We are very disappointed because I felt we were the better team," Wenger opined.
"The decision of the referee made the difference, we had many chances before that - especially in the second half.
"Out from nowhere, Riley has decided the game like he can do at Manchester United, we know that.
"I don't think there was any contact at all if you look at the images. Rooney even told our players that nobody touched him.
"I feel in a game of that importance, if you see how lightly the referee can award a penalty, it's hard to take.
"We can only master our own performance and not the referee's performance.
"I feel the boys gave absolutely everything, they played well especially if you consider they had two games already in the week.
"I can just congratulate them, and I'm very proud of their performance."
