Former Middlesbrough and Rangers midfielder Emerson has returned to Brazil to sign for Vasco da Gama.
Emerson was available on a free transfer after being released by The Gers at the end of last season.
Early in pre-season, the 32-year-old trained with Bolton Wanderers but he failed to clinch a contract at The Reebok Stadium.
He had spent over a decade playing in Europe and Emerson outlined the reasoning behind his decision to accept Vasco's offer.
"I came to Vasco because it is the Brazilian club that comes closest to having the structure of European football," said Emerson.
Emerson was signed by Vasco in time to be available for the opening weekend of the Brasiliero championship.
Vasco coach Geninho had moved for Emerson as he felt the experienced midfielder was the ideal candidate for his engine room.
