Holland turned to one of their all-time greats when Marco van Basten was appointed as coach of the national team. The 39-year-old will be taking on
his first major coaching role, nine years after his playing days were cruelly brought to an end by an ankle injury. Van Basten was arguably the finest
striker of his generation, and his goals propelled Holland to glory at Euro 88.
He has been allowed to leave his position on the Ajax coaching staff to take up the high-profile and demanding post. Formerly of Ajax and AC Milan,
Van Basten's career ended in 1995, after doctors decided that his troublesome right ankle would not stand up to regular football.
