Watford manager Ray Lewington is set to sign American centre back Jay Demerit to a one-year contract at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets have had the 24-year-old on trial after Lewington spotted him in a pre-season friendly playing for non-league club Northwood against his side.

Demerit impressed the Hertfordshire club further in a pre-season friendly against Spanish Primera Liga club Real Zaragoza and has done enough to earn a move to the Championship side.

The former University of Illinois-Chicago player was delighted to be making his impending move into the full-time English game.
