Newcastle Falcons began pre-season training on Monday without Jonny Wilkinson but the England fly-half is set to play a part in his club's upcoming campaign.

Wilkinson underwent neck surgery in February and appears to have made a full recovery.

He has been training with the Zurich Premiership club for some time and has been been given the all-clear from his medical team to take a full part in pre-season, including contact work.

Meanwhile, new signings Matt Burke and Semo Sititi are still away on international duty with Australia and Samoa respectively and those who have taken part in summer tours have either a week or a fortnight to recover before joining in training.

World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson has admitted he feared his playing days were over due to the injuries he picked up helping England to glory in Australia.

The fly-half has since played just over 50 minutes of rugby for his club Newcastle as a result of the neck and shoulder problems sustained Down Under last November.

However, he has been training with the Zurich Premiership side for some time and has been given the all-clear from his medical team to take a full part in pre-season, including contact work.
