Barry Bonds may be three homers behind Willie Mays, but the big number is not really his godfather's 660 lifetime smacks. The bigger number lingering
on the near horizon is Hank Aaron's all-time best 755.
With 657 homers, Bonds is now only 98 behind Aaron.
Bonds declined to speculate on how long it might take, but if he continues at his current pace -- 46 homers last season, 44 homers this season -- he
could tie and surpass Aaron sometime in 2006. Even Bonds admits that, at 39, he probably won't play enough games again in a single season to get near
his Major League record 73 homers in 2001.
But if he continues to average 45 homers a year... Who Knows!!
