THERE'S NO SMOKE IN CITY WITHOUT FIRE Nov 12 2003
I 'VE just spent three days in the Big Apple but, for all the pleasure it gave me, I might as well have endured a week in the State Penitentiary.
Land of the free? There's a joke.
To the growing army of people who've suggested to me in recent months that a smoking ban in Britain is "inevitable" or "bound to happen" I have a
warning.
The simplest way to permit the smoke police to impose draconian rules here is to show the same kind of complacency that's turned New York into a
society banned by law from smoking in public places and patrolled by little Hitlers, otherwise known as public health operatives.

I wholeheartedly agree.
