What's that bar under everyone's points that is grey and sometimes red?

That's the post and applause count bar. The more you post, the longer it gets I think. Or maybe it's post per day. And the more applauses you get, the redder it gets, this I know for sure.

Hope I've enlightened you somewhat

Yeah, if you click on it, a number comes up telling you how many points the poster has received from applauses.
It's a pretty cool feature.

Actually you only need to put your cursor over the bar, clicking isn't neccesary.

The more posts you have, the longer your bar gets, and the more applauses you get, the redder your bar gets.

Eventually after about 3200 posts your bar will be as long as it can be, and after 10 special applauses that cause color change, your bar will fall off and become black which is good and rare.

Really? It's not working for me. Maybe it's because I'm using Firefox.

Don't you mean 110 applauses? Every 10 applause changes the bar to the next colour gif-file i.e. 1m.gif, 2m.gif and so on until it falls of at 11m.gif because it doesn't exist.

10 regular applauses gives you 1 color change yes.

But 1 special applause gives you a color change aswell.

Yes, sorry using a different browser than IE may result in the clicking on the bar factor.

There's a normal and special applause? How do you know the difference? What warrants the special one?

I've been told that applauses differ from mods, supermods, and admin.

So i'm guessing that they change within each.

Here's a thread from Chissler, that pretty much spells it out-

post/applause bar

Although the normal and 'special' applause are news to me.

I've seen many references to either clicking or hovering over the bar to see additional information. I'm using IE7 I believe, (or latest version if not 7). Hovering, clicking, right click > properties, none of them seem to work for me.

Any ideas as to why this feature is broken in my case? I see the bar just fine but have never seen any additional functionality at all.
