Few died at the hands of Lenin. In fact, he was appalled by many of the things Stalin did and wanted to do. Stalin had to take away Lenin's power or else Lenin would have stopped much of the killing himself. Lenin wrote desperate letters during the last few years of his life in hopes of changing the direction Stalin and the rest of the Bolsheviks were leading the rest of Russia, but the party did everything it could to keep the letters from being publicized to the wider public.

He died a broken man as he watched his communist dream become a monster.

That said, however, he often approved the deaths of his enemies.
