That's definately pretty cool, and if it's real, I say this only
because the second picture looks a little suspicious, I'll give
the chinese credit for creating a cool piece of technology.

Would you happen to know what it's called?

This spider is true that is newly equipped in Tibet for Engineering unit. It's said that it can climb mountains.

Nope, its an excavator. Or more exactly, a "Schreitbagger" (mobile walking excavator). The technique was invented by the swiss engineer Ernst Menzi, over 4 decades ago.

The "chinese" Excavator in the pictures seems to be the model S2 by the Liechtenstein-based company "Kaiser AG". Here´s a small video of one.

Nevertheless, every modern excavator can "walk sideways" with the help of its backhoe.

don't tell me you've never seen a transformer before!!!

all nations today use transformers!

that's basical how they get electricity into your home! or else the electricity in your house would be over 500000V, and you will get shock to death within 2 meters radius of your electric plug!

for good sake you see those things hanging on electric poles all the time!

Incorporating wheels on the outriggers ! Brilliant !
Wish I'd thunk it up.

I wonder why it only has groundspades on 2 outriggers ? they should be on all 4

Ape, this is pure speculation.
If "ground-spades" are what I call outriggers, then I may have an answer.
The front are more mobile, requiring a more solid footing. (pun intended)
The rear, when in the down "stabilized" position, tires locked would provide a foundation, for the front to work from.
Did that make any sense, at all ?

LEXICON :

hey - it was bad terminology on my part - appologies - i meant that i expected it to have the same configuration @ each corner - with the folding spade which can take the weight off the tyre

even with the wheels "locked " - i am still wary about operating an excavator on pneumatic tyres - especially big lo-pressure off road / all terrain types like it seems to use .

every wheeled peice of equipment i have seen has jacks / spades / stabilizers to relieve the load from all road wheels when in operation .

this is not an excavator , but the fuchs 714 loader :

is reccomended to extend all 4 stabilizers befoe operation , on its wheels - the safe working load , and radius drops SHARPLY

PS - is it just my imagination , or does the chinese excavator apppear to use 2 different tyre sizes ?

I clicked on the article expecting to see a new rendition of the good ol electrical transformer.

Transformer toys were still in the future when I was a lad.

Fwiw - electrcity is generated at fairly low voltages.
Something along the lines of 7kv - 12kv and stepped up via transformers to high voltages for efficiency of transmission.

And then stepped down at the receiving/distribution station and also at the pole or underground transformer near your house.

not quite

the " climb mountains " is a slight exaduration

but what it will be able to do is use a combination of the outriggers and bucket arm to "walk " accross terrain where its wheels would loose traction

it can , or should also be able to climb over trenches and onto a ledge

lastly - it can use the outriggers to create a safe / stable worling platform when operating on a steep hillside - with little or no preperation .

a more comventional digger often has to cut itself a step and build a ledge to work from before it begins

this obviously takes extra time - so a machine that can self deploy and needs no prepratation work to find solid footing is a much more effivient and faster digger in mountains / wilderness terrain .

hope thats clear ... ish
