Yep that's what the experts say, the impact can become greater as it goes along or other waves from what i heard them say,

British Experts say that its possible that the biggest threat is over, but its best to always remain vigilant,

Just to update

Tsunami warming has now been lifted,

An official in charge of monitoring earthquake and tsunami said that higher waves could hit Hokkaido and surrounding areas depending on the geological features of the areas.

The official said that seismic activity has been common along the deep-sea trench near the Kuril Islands, and that earthquake activity temporarily increased from the end of September to the beginning of October.

As usual...the folks in BC heard about the Tsunami warning late...

I have to get it from ATS...oh and now there's a blurb on the radio news

Amazing.

Anyone in Washington get a proper warning? EB tone on the TV or anything?

My goodness...

Well, this article was just posted on CNN in reference to the events.

I have to say I'm impressed overall. They mention that Japan took numerous measures including notifying citizens, stopping certain train services etc. The prime goal appeared to be to minimize the amount of people in affected areas.

The waves that hit were only 16 inches high, but they had been predicted to be 6 feet! The government of Japan did the right thing. We've seen how the power of nature can kill hundreds of thousands with one strike.

When it comes to nature, preparedness is the only way to save lives.

Check back a few days - i.e. 11th and 12th - some even more impressive spikes and troughs but nothing out of the ordinary reported on those days.

Along the BC coast all we had was a watch...no actual alert. That's why no one heard it. Only a few channels picked it up and it was a ticker along the bottom of the screen (I called a friend to ask).

Whew...don't like these things, I'm only 37 feet above sea level.

Can a 16inch wave be considered a tsunami?

ATS did a better job at reporting this then any major news station.. I have been watching and did not even hear about it util after the massive 16inch tsunami hit. Japan could have been wiped out to sea and I never woulda knew!

The earthquake has been upgraded:

Magnitude 8.3 - KURIL ISLANDS USGS
8.3 KURIL ISLANDS EMSC

All I can say is WOW, and reflect on the timing,
since it has happened in close to the time of year
that the Christmas tsunami of '04 did.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

Tsunami warnings cancelled...

Rockpuck yes it can, See its not like a normal ocean wave, A Quake wave can go at speeds of 400mph now small or large that alone can do alot of damage coming in at that speed,

An explanation on why a tsunami is short in the ocean, but high at the shore. The page is good overall, here is the breifest version:

www.solarnavigator.net...
The wave travels across the ocean at speeds from 500 to 1000 km/h, so the second or third waves may not arrive until more than an hour later. As the wave approaches land, the sea shallows and the wave no longer travels as quickly, so it begins to 'pile-up': the wave becomes steeper and taller, and there is less distance between crests.

Asala. Is there a video of the 16inch wave going 400 mph????? I think that would be a sight to see.

8.3 earthquake though is huge. Did anyone in Japan actually feel it?

It seems that a lot of people were waiting for this to be a disaster. I'm happy it was nothing. They took some good precautions - Better safe than sorry...

The vibes are all messed up today man...thats all I can really say, very wierd today...

I too think HAARP has somthing to do with this...

That was just a magnetic recording, what makes you think it was caused by harp? Have you had a look at those graphs? Tell you what... Go to the month view. By those standards we should have had some killer earthquakes. It is interesting that we had one at that time, but was it CAUSED by harp? I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that.
